Another Domain Name Question... - 5/24/2005 6:05:00
Searching for domain name registering prices using the auDA (Australian Domain Name Registry) list of accredited domain name registrars, i've noticed a huge variation in prices for .com.au registrations. The cheapest i've found is $49 for 2 years and the dearest is about $160 for 2 years. Can anyone tell me if i shouldn't just advice my client to register with the cheapest one? Are there any hidden catches with cheaper ones in anyone's experiences? Am i correct in thinking this is only a registration process, and once registered the domain name can be moved to any web host for hosting? Nicole

As regards cheaper domain registering: we have several .au domains registered with Wobygong (clients' and our own) and one with NetRegistry. Neither are the very cheapest, but we have been quite happy with their service.

I see you have never tried to transfer a domain out of Network Solutions death grasp . It can be quite a hassle. Reflect has hit upon an important part of domain registrars - customer service. Make sure your registrar has a control panel. I use dropping services to pick up domain names and am always frustrated when I get stuck with some lame registrar where you can even change the DNS settings without having to email them and wait days. ICANN has made some changes to make transfering domains out of a registrar easier, but if they don't allow you to easily unlock the name - you will have problems. I once has a domain stuck in a registrar located in Kuwait. It took close to 6 months to move it. Updating the DNS would take a week or longer.
