run out of ports - 5/26/2005 16:58:54
I have a small office network with four workstations networked through a 4 port hub which also routes into the internet. The machines are XP or Win2k. I needed to add a fifth machine to have access to the internet, so I thought I would put an extra LAN card into the fourth machine with a crossover cable. They both have XP. The fourth machine now has two LAN cards.

Problem is, how do I get the fifth computer to get internet access. I tried giving internet sharing to the fourth machine but it says there is a network address conflict an it wont work. I have tried searching for tutorial on the web, but I cant find one for this setup.

Can anyone help?

I think it might be easier to attach another router to the router? I've not tried what you are doing, but maybe this page can help? http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/wxpbrdge.htm or the site: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/winxppro.htm

I agree, I routinely dasiy chain switches to segment traffic at home. You gotta keep the upstream/downstream clean for all those gaming packets :). I locate the "work" machines on the farthest hop (the end of the chain) as they are less intensive on the data stream.

With switches, wired that it, going for around $10 US it's hard not to justify.

Take care,

Brian
