testing in 2 versions of IE????? - 5/26/2005 18:25:24
Hi
with the help of outfront members, I got my site www.maranoa.org.au./agent/index.html to work pretty well in IE6 and Firefox.
Today, I checked it at work in IE5.5, and it's a real dog.
How, when developing, can I test in a range of versions of IE, to keep my page viewable? I can't run 2 versions of IE side by side can I?

Paul

You can download a stand-alone version of IE either 5 or 5.5 can't remember - came across it yesteday but didn't take a note of the link I'm afraid - try googling IE 5.0.

Also - my beloved * Browsercam.com will give you screenshots of your site in any browser or on any platform you choose.  There's a free trial period too.

* Beloved in that it costs me money and drives me mad.

The main problem, of course, is that IE wants to be an integral part of the OS... it doesn't like to run as a standalone.  But you can beat the beast into submission!

A while back, a guy named Joe Maddalone "stumbled" across a way to convince multiple versions of IE to run as standalones on the same machine.  The original article (at least as far as I know) is here:

http://labs.insert-title.com/labs/article795.aspx

Another kind soul, Ryan Parman, has sourced all of the files mentioned in Joe's methods and made them available for download from his site, in convenient zip files for each IE version, all the way back to v3 (if you're crazy enough to care or if you just want a laugh).  You'll find the downloads here:

http://www.skyzyx.com/downloads/

Just download the version you want, unzip the file to it's own folder, and run iexplore.exe from that folder to run the corresponding version of IE.

There are some minor quirks (see the "Quirks and Caveats" section of Ryan's downlads page), but it sure beats booting to multiple partitions, using mutiple test machines, or running some virtual OS just to test older versions of IE.

Cheers,

Kevin

Oh no not at all.  My husband is a blond adonis who flies $80 million worth of aircraft everyday and yet manages to be an excellent and caring husband and father

(and he's standing right next to me...)
