alt="" vs title="" for links - 5/29/2005 0:19:45
Here is an interesting question. When do you use alt, and when do you use title?

alt for images and title for links?

IE uses alt, and other browsers use title. Would it be a good idea to use both? Or would using both be bad for SEO?

i use alt for alternate text (i.e. images) and title for any additional info - such as links or just images. title is also useful for acronyms and abbreviations.

this has some example of using both http://joeclark.org/book/sashay/serialization/Chapter06.html (and long desc, which i have never used yet!)

I use title for both images and links (and within the acronym tag).  It is useful on images because the user may still want to see info on the image even when the image is displayed and some browsers won't show the alt tag when the image is shown only if it is switched off or absent.

Longdesc will be great but doesn't have good browser support yet unfortunately.

I use title on anything that supports it. I find it useful for both sighted and visually impaired as it brings up a tool tip containing your description. On images I also use alt.

Longdesc is a different kettle of fish. It links to another page where you can give a full description of the image. As Tailslide says, it doesn't have a lot of support.

Thanks. Longdesc is a new one to me :)
