Speed up Acrobat Reader loading - 5/29/2005 21:38:45
Do you hate it when Acrobat Reader seems to take ages to open a PDF in your browser or in the program?

I stumbled across this method of improving load time immensely when looking for something completely different:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11041

I applied it, and it works a treat for me.

N.B. I have Win2K and Acrobat 6, it might not work on other versions. Plus read the list of disabled plug-ins carefully, in case there is one you know you need.

The latest version of Adobe reader (they dropped the acrobat)* loads instantly.

*luckily there was a safety net.

I read somewhere that Reader 7.0 is even worse bloatware than 6. I've also read that some people have successfully gone back to using 5.0 and been much happier. So I haven't considered upgrading to 7.0. Do you recommend it?

Not sure what you mean by that, but I am using Reader 7.0 with the latest upgrade and it loads instantly.  ASAICS it is the best version of Acrobat/Reader so far.

When I first downloaded it was slow to start (but not much different to the previous versions). You can set it to search for updates, and a recent one solved that problem.  Now it loads quickly without going through the long winded start-up routine.

Bloatware:
"Software bloat is a derogatory term used to describe the tendency of newer computer programs to use larger amounts of disk space, more CPU power and/or more RAM memory than older programs. Software exhibiting this tendency is referred to as bloatware or, less commonly, fatware."

Haven't noticed any effects on the system when it's open so AFAIC any bloating that has taken place doesn't affect me. I would give it a try.

Spyware in Adobe Reader 7 - 6/13/2005 9:18:06

This is a pretty compelling reason to stick with, or go back to version 5 or better still, switch to an alternative:

For the feature to be used, a PDF had to be created, uploaded to the company's server to be tagged, and then distributed, the report said.
Doesn't this mean that they can only keep track of their own pdf files? I don't see this as a major problem; am I wrong? If I create a pdf and publish it on a web site they can't track that, and why would I mind if someone somewhere logs the number of times I open a file which they have created?

(I'm not agressively disagreeing with you I just don't understand the problem, and as I am quite happily using version7 I need to be persuaded to go back to the clunky old version 5);~}

Acrobat Reader 7 rocks. Much faster loading and seems to display pdf files from server faster also.

Just remember that when you install version 7 -- 'just say no' to all of the additional plug-ins that it wants you to have. If you don't need them, don't install them.

7 seems to be better and faster than 5 and 6.

Some newer PDFs trip 5 up and life is too short for 6.

In respect of Spyware, someone cracked a printed code in a printed Xerox colour printer that gives all the details of the printer. Guess such coding may not be unique.

Always assume "They" see everything.

I've always used a tiny utility called Adobe Reader SpeedUp. Works like a treat :)
