Hardware issues - 6/1/2005 2:57:34
I bought a new hard drive (80GB) and wanted to keep the old HD as a ghost.  Upon putting the new HD in, the system was looking for a boot drive in A (the floppy).  I checked in setup and reconfigured so that the system would go to the CDROM first.  However, it system still wanted to go to 'A'.  This was with the Windows XP disk in the CDROM and nothing in A.

The system would not recognize my old HD.  I disconnected the old HD, but still the same issue with wanting a boot disk in A.

However, this problem is now superseded by a newer problem -  the computer is not turning on at all.  I have tried different plugs, but nothing seems to work.

System is a PIII, Dell Dimension 4100.

Hi and Welcome to OutFront

Sometimes removing the battery to reset the CMOS helps.  If you can get power / post info to the board then:

Have you checked the Master/Slave configuration of the new/old drives?  That is a relatively common mistake as many after-market drives come pre-configured as Master.  2 Master drives on the same IDE port will not work.

To rule all that out, hook the CD ROM drive to one IDE cable/port and only the new HD to the other IDE cable/port.  If it is recognized then, the master/slave issue is probably the prob.

Hope it helps.

That might be his problem in the first bit:)

Some of the older PCs look to boot from A as standard, so you need to change it in the BIOS/CMOS to make it boot from CD or HDD first.

Pick one: Power Supply Unit, Motherboard, Case. PSU may have blown, motherboard may be fried, button on case maybe damaged:)
