Mail server entries in stats - 6/1/2005 21:10:37
I am just perusing the stats for one of our sites and notice something I haven't seen before - numerous visits to a single page (and a few to 2 pages) from lots of different mail server addresses e.g. mail.somesite.com or mail.anothersite.com.au
How can a mail server be delivering pages? Is this a form of log spamming or am I missing something?

Many thanks for replying Brian.
I was viewing the entries in AwStats when I saw the oddity. But I have now been to the raw log file and traced a couple of the 8 visits so far this month that seem to come from a mail server.
The log entries look like normal visits from Google, here's one (slightly edited):
I then did a DNS report on the domain name given in AwStats and the IP is indeed the mail server for that domain. Their NS are 202.83.81.98 and 202.83.94.90.
So I guess there is nothing actually suspicious about it, but it does seem very strange.

You know I never thought about this. When I do e-mail server work in our DMZ I will utilize another mail server and browse when a process is taking a long time that has no interaction. The servers I browse from are registered in our MX record. I wonder how many webmasters minds that has played with.
