dpf -> Fonts (6/2/2005 14:10:54)

I am looking for suggestions for sites with fancy fonts ( free or paid) - googling gives me too many choices..lol

Tailslide -> RE: Fonts (6/2/2005 14:34:52)

My suggestions:

http://www.robotjohnny.com/fontpage.html Doesn't seem to be working at the mo - but worth hanging on to - nice free stuff.

http://www.pixilate.com/fonts/ - pretty stuff!

http://www.goodfonts.org/sans/

http://www.letterheadfonts.com/ - fancy stuff

Abstract Fonts

The problem about those freeware font sites is that you can't really separate the bad-quality fonts from the good ones. If you purchase your fonts from an official foundry, the fonts you get are without question top quality ones.

Manfred Klein has some good quality fonts (with some usage restrictions) and Keith Bates has a few nice “freebies”. Lido, a round and playful free serif typeface is also an essential.

this is going to sound dumb i relieze that..... how do you have the font on the site if the people don't have it on their machine?[&o]

not dumb... you put it into a graphic

curious monkey -> RE: Fonts (6/23/2006 16:53:22)

so I should make the whole paragraph a graphic?

dpf -> RE: Fonts (6/23/2006 16:57:24)

welll..... thats where it gets tricky..making text into graphics causes problems with seo and accessibility. personally, i only do it for a title if the font truly impacts the visual

curious monkey -> RE: Fonts (6/23/2006 16:59:08)

so hypothetically if i wanted my whole site to be in some custom font..... what would i have to do? i'm so confused....[&o]

thanks you guys! [8D]

anderskorte -> RE: Fonts (6/24/2006 11:53:08)

What's wrong with extra work? [:)]

This reminds me, here is a great example use of text as graphics. Joyent

Tailslide -> RE: Fonts (6/24/2006 12:39:52)

Your main text shouldn't be an image - it's bad for accessibility and it's not good for SEO either. Text as graphics for headings is ok using Image Replacement methods so you've basically got the image positioned on top of the text - best of both worlds.

Here's an article: http://www.ryznardesign.com/web_coding/image_replacement/index.html
