akston -> Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 8:26:22)

On the off chance that someone might know.

When I publish an update I never see it online from my computer. But it's there on my wife's computer and on my Mac. Now I've emptied the cache, and cookies, looked at it in IE and Mozilla, enabled Java in IE and Load Images in Mozilla Firefox. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas.

A solution to this would be most welcome.

Kitka -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 8:33:35)

Have you tried holding Control button while clicking Refresh/Reload or Control + F5?

Or, try placing a question mark at the end of the file name e.g. www.mysite.com/index.html?

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 8:38:04)

Kitka,

Thanks, I just tried both. Still no luck.

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 10:01:10)

It has to be something to do with your cache. I've had similar problems but if my other half went on and got the correct page then mine would always show it immediately afterwards when I did a refresh.

I think that was something to do with the ISPs cache but the suggestions Kitka made should sort that.

If you're using IE try setting it to search for a new page every time you go online.

bobby -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 14:39:35)

Have you double checked to make sure you're looking online and not at your local drive?

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 15:27:25)

Oh yes! Looking online. But it sure does show up locally.

bobby -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 15:28:26)

What happens if you try to navigate to a specific page... other than the homepage?

http://www.yourweb.com/page.htm

??

Spooky -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 15:38:37)

Your wife and you use different connections / hosts?

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 15:55:56)

If I publish an image on any page, the new image will not appear from my PC. A new text does, sometimes, but not always.

My wife's PC is on the same LAN as I am with mine and the Mac.

I admit this seems crazy. I've lived with it for months; figured it's about time to do some asking. And I thank you for your suggestions and questions. We might just hit upon the solution yet. Unless it's something about my computer itself--it's getting to be three years old, but I don't have any problems to speak of except this odd behavior.

bobby -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 16:02:40)

very strange indeed...

Every time I've run into this a quick CTRL + Refresh always fixed it...

Do you know if you're caching pages locally? On your machine, that is... not at the ISP?

Even so, clearing your cache should have fixed that problem.

Does it make a difference if you use another browser?

It shouldn't... but anything is worth a shot at this point...

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 16:14:44)

Swap your wife's machine over when she's not looking. [;)]

bobby -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 16:18:47)

If computers work like cars and other things she's probably got the nicer one anyway... I think she'll notice...

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 16:32:03)

Now this is something new. "Caching pages locally"? I never heard of it. I wouldn't know it if I am doing that. How can I check that?

Thanks,

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 18:18:07)

I did a search of my PC for FrontPage. Came up with two. One, the one I'm sure I use, is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs The other is in an external drive I:\Program Files\Office10\Shortcut Bar\Office

Now if I click either, FrontPage opens.

Is this a lead to a solution? If so, what would you do?

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 18:30:56)

Shortcut Bar

That should just be a toolbar with links to the various Office apps, it shouldn't be actual executables.

Do a search for FRONTPG.EXE if you want to check where it is.

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/3/2005 18:43:02)

I come up with
FRONTPG.EXE-2F110129.pf
in
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
and
FRONTPG
in
I:\Program Files\Office10

I wonder if I should be uninstalling FrontPage and re-install in one location? I'm just guessing because I don't know enough about what I've found here.

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/4/2005 10:08:37)

Ignore the one in Prefetch. It's all to do with Windows speeding up load times. The prefetch folder an get over full so it is possible to empty every now and then.

If you're not happy and want to re-install, use add/remove programs which is accessible from Control Panel, select FP and remove. Reboot the machine afterwards and then re-install. If you choose custom you can install it in a folder called Applications or whatever. Native install should go into Program Files.

Nicole -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/4/2005 18:51:03)

I used to have this problem years ago, and so did my flatmate using a different computer in a different room. Back then we were uploading all our sites to geocities, we'd make a change to one of our pages and it may take literally days for that new change to appear on the computer where the change was made, but on the other computer in the house the new page was displaying.

So, I'm wondering if they're sites being uploaded to free web hosts that is causing your problem, if so i also had a similar problem to this earlier this year.

I know I wrote about this here at the time, so it should be here somewhere but i can't find it. New problem was to my web host which I pay for, I was changing a particular page, uploading it, not liking the changes and changing it repeatedly and uploading it each time. In the end I found that my server had about 13 different versions of the page i was changing in the cache? I'd try to delete them but couldn't, so maybe this is happening to the host you're publishing your site to?

Nicole

No, they're both paid hosts.

But I've done the changes as you describe, over and over again, only it's the same thing I'm changing: trying to get a particular image up.

I've found that it does work when I edit online. I'm getting used to that as a solution.

Thanks,

Nicole -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/4/2005 20:30:56)

Hi Robert

Are you changing the image and then saving it as the same name? If so, try renaming the changed image and see if that works.

Nicole

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/4/2005 20:36:46)

Nicole,

Good idea. I tried so many things over the months I forget what sometimes worked. I believe I did try re-naming the file with success. Will give it another try.

Thanks

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/5/2005 8:41:32)

If that works then it's definitely your cache that's causing the problem.

akston -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/5/2005 9:20:40)

OK. I believe it.

Now, what would I ask the ISP to do in order to fix this?

Except for this: Bobby asked

Do you know if you're caching pages locally?
I don't know what that means, but it does seem more likely than the ISP, since all three machines are using the same.

Thanks all,

Spooky -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/5/2005 14:16:52)

Are you running any type of application on your PC that caches or "speeds up" web sites?
It seems odd that both IE and FF would be affected

No, I learned years ago (when I got my first PC and was trying anything and everything) to leave stuff like "speeds up your browsing" alone.

I now use Firefox as my default browser, but again, as you say it's odd. The day a solution is found will be a day of long lived frustration removed. It's not so bad to live with that I'm ready to do a clean install of XP yet.

jaybee -> RE: Minor Annoyance (6/6/2005 6:22:59)

No it can't be your ISP otherwise your wife would get the same old page, or, when she got the new one so would you.

Must be something on your machine or a setting in your LAN.
