Minor Annoyance - 6/3/2005 8:26:22
On the off chance that someone might know. When I publish an update I never see it online from my computer. But it's there on my wife's computer and on my Mac. Now I've emptied the cache, and cookies, looked at it in IE and Mozilla, enabled Java in IE and Load Images in Mozilla Firefox. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas. A solution to this would be most welcome.

Have you tried holding Control button while clicking Refresh/Reload or Control + F5? Or, try placing a question mark at the end of the file name e.g. www.mysite.com/index.html?

Kitka, Thanks, I just tried both. Still no luck.

Oh yes! Looking online. But it sure does show up locally.

If I publish an image on any page, the new image will not appear from my PC. A new text does, sometimes, but not always. My wife's PC is on the same LAN as I am with mine and the Mac. I admit this seems crazy. I've lived with it for months; figured it's about time to do some asking. And I thank you for your suggestions and questions. We might just hit upon the solution yet. Unless it's something about my computer itself--it's getting to be three years old, but I don't have any problems to speak of except this odd behavior.

Now this is something new. "Caching pages locally"? I never heard of it. I wouldn't know it if I am doing that. How can I check that? Thanks,

I did a search of my PC for FrontPage. Came up with two. One, the one I'm sure I use, is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs The other is in an external drive I:\Program Files\Office10\Shortcut Bar\Office Now if I click either, FrontPage opens. Is this a lead to a solution? If so, what would you do?

I come up with FRONTPG.EXE-2F110129.pf in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and FRONTPG in I:\Program Files\Office10 I wonder if I should be uninstalling FrontPage and re-install in one location? I'm just guessing because I don't know enough about what I've found here.

I used to have this problem years ago, and so did my flatmate using a different computer in a different room. Back then we were uploading all our sites to geocities, we'd make a change to one of our pages and it may take literally days for that new change to appear on the computer where the change was made, but on the other computer in the house the new page was displaying. So, I'm wondering if they're sites being uploaded to free web hosts that is causing your problem, if so i also had a similar problem to this earlier this year. I know I wrote about this here at the time, so it should be here somewhere but i can't find it. New problem was to my web host which I pay for, I was changing a particular page, uploading it, not liking the changes and changing it repeatedly and uploading it each time. In the end I found that my server had about 13 different versions of the page i was changing in the cache? I'd try to delete them but couldn't, so maybe this is happening to the host you're publishing your site to? Nicole

But I've done the changes as you describe, over and over again, only it's the same thing I'm changing: trying to get a particular image up. I've found that it does work when I edit online. I'm getting used to that as a solution. Thanks,

Hi Robert Are you changing the image and then saving it as the same name? If so, try renaming the changed image and see if that works. Nicole

Nicole, Good idea. I tried so many things over the months I forget what sometimes worked. I believe I did try re-naming the file with success. Will give it another try. Thanks

If that works then it's definitely your cache that's causing the problem. OK. I believe it. Now, what would I ask the ISP to do in order to fix this? Except for this: Bobby asked quote:
Do you know if you're caching pages locally? I don't know what that means, but it does seem more likely than the ISP, since all three machines are using the same. Thanks all,

ORIGINAL: Spooky Are you running any type of application on your PC that caches or "speeds up" web sites? It seems odd that both IE and FF would be affected quote:
Are you running any type of application on your PC that caches or "speeds up" web sites? No, I learned years ago (when I got my first PC and was trying anything and everything) to leave stuff like "speeds up your browsing" alone. I now use Firefox as my default browser, but again, as you say it's odd. The day a solution is found will be a day of long lived frustration removed. It's not so bad to live with that I'm ready to do a clean install of XP yet.
