Modem dead end - 6/5/2005 21:52:13
I am setting up a pc for a friend and the only thing pending is to make the modem connect...
I have read all the manuals and tried all kind of setting combinations and updated the driver and reinstalled it many times, checked the bios to make sure about IRQ, moved it to different PCIs but....
it shows it does not respond or it doesnt exist
although its is detected and it is in the device manager list, etc, etc.
It is a Trust (Motorola) MD-1100 56K V92 PCI (Internal) Modem for a PIII, 1000 with a W98 (my W2K is not working and XP is just for me ) and brand new.
(Could it be defect however? (I have no diagnostic card to check it ))

If anybody has any clue how I could make it happen, s/he would make my day.

thanks

Cal

I'm a little confused here. Is the modem for Win98 and you're trying to install it on a PC that has Win2K?

Do you have the appropriate drivers for the operating system you're using?

Does it show up in the Hardware Device Manager as an Unknown device or under the modems at all? (Not when installing it or setting it up but just going into the device manager.)

The modem is suitable for all Windows starting from 98 to XP. I would have set her PC with W2K but my installation CD is kind of worn out so I had to go down to 98; that is the PC has 98 on.
I checked also the System Info today for possible problems with drivers but everything is fine.
In the Device Manager and under Modems it is identified (when I go into it). When I run the Modem Diagnostics it is ok, however, if I click on the more info and gives me a connection test it says that there is no modem:)
If I try to connect it gives me 2 messages: the first time that there is simply no connection or that there is a modem problem.
Another thing that comes but I can remember from what tool is to check the Interrupt of the port (????) I get some other window saying Interrupt 4, Address3F8, NS16550AN, but I have no clue if these values are correct (esp. about the Interrupt) Any idea about that?
The support from Trust (Motorola) said to go Start/run type telephon.cpl but I cannot because it cannot be associated with any application...
(anyways, what is cpl?) He also said that since I tried more than one PCI and its not responding could be defect.

Thanks

Cal

Does that indicate the supplied software is not installed? The cpl file may be a script file provided by the software. If it has no association, it could strongly indicate a failed software install.

It very well could be a bad one also, but if the Hardware Device Manager said there is one there and the dialing S/W doesn't see it, I would try uninstalling and re-installing:

1. Drivers
2. Software

In that order. Also make sure any virus protection is temporarily disabled during the install.
