dead link...

Nicole -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 8:41:47)

Hi Ciprian,

I must say when your site finally loaded, it took an age on a 56k modem, it looked nice, but i was wondering why there was no information, only links on the left and ads on the right.

I was tempted to click more links after the "software" and "email" links i clicked, but didn't have the time to wait for whatever was in there to download.

Tailslide -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 9:02:20)

Ok - I see it now.

Is there any reason why you're using .swfs to do the main navigation menu? It's a really simple nav bar - you could easily use one of the CSS ones at http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/index.htm which would cut down on your file size and also enable someone like me who uses Firefox with Adblock on to see it properly (it scrunches them all up vertically with Adblock all over them).

Also - you're missing the ";"s off the end of some of your styles which might affect how it looks.

that is exactly correct. using Flash (.swf) has it's drawbacks and should only be done when the benefits outway the drawbacks - in your case, you have created simple mouseovers that can easily be done better and more accessible ways - esp css as tailslide said.

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 11:40:46)

Thanks all. I made the buttons from 0 ... and I wanted the site to be made by me. I found tons of buttons but I wanted to create my own.
I'll take all of your critics very seriously ... and i'll be back here to post again ... Thanks [:D]

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 14:49:21)

Ok ... I see what you're saying. But since we already got in the discussion, why are the flash buttons not right ? They're don't take up too much disk space, they load really fast, and they're exactly what I want. Do the buttons you're talking about load faster ? Or what's so special about them ? [:)]

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 14:53:24)

Nicole ... thanks for checking out my site. I didn t have too many problems with the site loading speed ... and I checked it from a few places.
What do u mean by more info ? U mean I shoud have a little intro about the site on the home page ?

d a v e -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 14:56:37)

i'm on broadband and it took about a minute to load. too slow

Tailslide -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 15:03:52)

Hi again

Just about the flash buttons: I've attached a screenshot of what they look like in my browser - all scrunched up - probably not what you wanted them to look like... I'm guessing your site is aimed at the younger generation - and they're just the lot that'll be using Firefox like me!

Flash navigation like that isn't always accessible to people not using a mouse for navigation - you can't "tab" through it like normal navigation - it's never a good idea to limit your viewers.

Flash is excellent for doing very pretty stuff on websites - and used as such it's brilliant. It's just that there are other ways of doing the important stuff like navigation that are better suited to the purpose - i.e. accessible to everyone, not designated as an Ad by adblockers - using flash for navigation is just a bit of overkill. Anyway I'll get off my soapbox now!

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 16:47:20)

wow ... i never would have guessed. Thanks for the attachment. I'll look into those new buttons once i get home.

d a v e - what do u suggest for the site to load faster ?

thanks guys

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 16:59:19)

Me again [:D]

The site looks awful in FireFox. All the layers I used for some of the images and for some links are way off. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Now u gotta help me fix the problem. In IE the site looks fine ... what can I do to make it look the same in FireFox ? Except changing the Flash buttons. Which i'll do very very soon :)

sophistikatied -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 17:04:39)

Just thought I'd mention that even though I use IE/Netscape for browsing, my workplace doesn't have flash installed on any of the company computers, so I was also unable to view the navigation bar. I think that normal graphics would increase accessibility for all of your users.

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 17:17:55)

Did I mention that I use Dreamweaver ? Does it matter ?

Kitka -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 17:34:26)

Lots of people around here use Dreamweaver. The tools you use are not as important as the final product and how well it works once published.

I am on broadband, and your site loaded excruciatingly slowly. I'm suspecting the file size of the graphics as the main problem, perhaps you can optimise them?

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/7/2005 17:39:54)

Whewww ... i tought i was gonna get kicked out [8D]
What do u mean by optimising ? I saw that the files are a little bigger than usual. But if i try to save them with a lower quality the image is really affected.

So i m not sure what to do.

airattack111 -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/8/2005 0:32:57)

The site looks good to me "dont like the google ads though"

The flash buttons line up perfectly, and I use firefox.

There's nothing wrong with flash buttons they load much faster in my opinion than gif files.

The site did take about 6 seconds to load "probably because i have 5 programs open and an adware scan running, and norton anti virus scanning, no biggie, I can wait, lol [8|]

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/8/2005 9:21:57)

Thanks for the post airattack :)
I downloaded firefox and it didn t look too good ... but i checked out the % of the users that use firefox ... only 5%. I'm not saying that they don t count, but i'll think about changing my buttons.

see ya

Tailslide -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/8/2005 10:08:20)

You have to remember exactly who that 5% are though - Firefox users may well form a higher percentage of your site's visitors than you think since your site is aimed at a younger audience.

5% is a high enough percentage anyway that you should be concerned - once it falls lower that 1% I'd stop worrying (IE 5 in some polls).

Also - because FF generally renders sites "properly" and IE doesn't always it's wise to ensure it looks ok in FF - if nothing else for future browsers which (fingers crossed) will render along the lines of FF rather than IE.

The use of flash buttons has nothing really to do with the browser issue - it's an accessibility issue. Your buttons are very simple therefore there are more appropriate ways of rendering them - CSS or gifs for instance. If they were really really fancy then fine - use flash (provide an alternative too of course).

dpf -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/8/2005 10:42:05)

it isnt so much that there is somethingwrong with them - they can be very "flashy" haha..but with flash buttons, the link is inside the flash movie and not visible in the html and thus not accesible except via flash player.

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/8/2005 12:27:18)

I see what you re saying. Trust me ... i m not gonna overlook the FF users. No way ! I'll try some new buttons. Why not. I ll check them out tomorrow. Playing Lineage II now :))

gotta lvl up [:)]

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/11/2005 7:44:26)

I found out why FireFox is having problems with the flash buttons. I downloaded FF and tried it. every single gif or jpg that I have in a layer is a little off in FF. I m not sure why ... but I hope you guys will tell me. All the images are a little lower. That s why the flash buttons seem so weird. Because that s a layer in which i put the buttons.
How else can i add buttons ? And place them exactly where I want ?

Tailslide -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/11/2005 9:36:28)

Hi again

Try removing the paragraph tag around your navigation - just a guess.

(If you ever do any other sites, as a general rule it's a bad idea to use postion:absolute to lay out your page - it's fine for small elements but not for large areas of layout - too easily "broken" by people - for instance if they increase the text size a couple of times . Positioning things in a completely fixed way is a print thing - the web should be more fluid and adaptable.)

b34nz -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/18/2005 1:11:23)

some people already said it but HOLY COW @ the loading time

womble -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/18/2005 4:03:56)

Looks good, though I'd agree with others about the use of flash for navigation.

I've just tried it in both IE and FF. In IE both the Google ads and the 'fun' button are sticking out on the right hand side of the page. In FF it's just the 'fun' button.

As I said, I think the site looks good, but I'm wondering why you have a home page with no info on it about the site, what it is, who it's for, etc. You've got a lovely big space there that's under-utilised at the moment.

Also, I checked out your site on the W3C validator, and it came back with 42 errors, which may well explain why it's rendering strangely on some browsers.

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/21/2005 10:59:11)

womble ...
thanks ... it seems that i have a few errors [:D]

I ll try to fix them
i ll let u know when they re done ... maybe u can check again. But I don t get something

cipriann -> RE: www.skillz.ro (6/21/2005 19:00:01)

I checked www.yahoo.com on W3C and it had like three hundred errors. Lots of them were similar to mine. So I don t know what to think.

Hmmmm let me check that!
But who on the world gave you an idea to comparison your site with YAHOO
