Save your important files to a backup drive or CD's and then wipe the HDD clean with the new install. I had nothing but problems on my HP when I upgraded from ME to XP... eventually had to wipe it out and start over anyway. _____________________________ If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? We get a lot of clients computers that are so messed up, the only time effective solution is a clean install. And over the years I have developed a check list of files to backup and restore. Others might find it useful. Add or subtract items to form your personal list:

E-mail
Address books
My Documents/Pictures/Music
Digital camera galleries
Export Outlook files
Favorites Folder/s (IE and FF etc)
Fonts
Drivers (esp if computer is old or non-standard)
Passwords
Product Keys/Licence numbers, esp Microsoft (I use the free Belarc Advisor to extract these from registry)
Dialup networking settings & passwords (DUN)
Webshots/Screen saver Collections
Downloads
Accounting � MYOB/Quick Books/Money etc
Log/ID Files � ICQ/Messenger/AIM etc
MP3s/sound files/play lists
Saved games
Recipe program folders
FrontPage Webs
FrontPage added themes
Graphics/Plug-ins/Tubes/Brushes/Frames/Templates
Desktop (to remind me what programs need to be reinstalled)

If I've missed anything important that you always backup please post here.

I'll have to read through it all again a few times to understand it all. I can move around a computer and use various programs, but I certainly am no expert. Thanks Kitka for the checklist. Bob B. I just have one problem. When I click on turn off computer, it does the whole close down thing and then comes to a screen that says that it is safe to turn off the computer. The problem is, there is no button on my computer to turn off the computer. Is there a setting that I have missed to tell the Windows program to shut the computer completely off? I went there and had to go to the APM tab and check the box for "enable advanced power management support". The computer now shuts down when I click the Turn Off Computer icon. Thanks for your help. So far the XP system seems to be working GREAT! No more of the infamous blue screens. Bob (in reply to Spooky)
