virus or hacker - help! - 6/8/2005 14:23:52
Hi

A weird thing is happening to me... I'm quite used to emails with suspect attachments (possible viruses) but today I have received several apparently from my own domain name!

e.g. - at "myowndomainname.com" I have only formulated one email address - "rick@myowndomainname.com" - today I have received emails (with suspect zip attachments) from

webmaster@myowndomainname.com
service@myowndomainname.com
admin@myowndomainname.com
etc.

the email properties says they are from these addresses and the IP address (sent from) is my own! I am about to do a virus scan but am just wondering if anyone knows of anything like this happening and if it is most likely a virus, an attempt by someone to send me a virus and masking the addresses or if someone may have actually hacked my hosting account and set up these names temporarily

???

Any help, advice welcome

Thanks

Rick

It doesn't take a hacker to send an e-mail that looks like the address is from your domain. It does however take one to send e-mail using your mailserver. But if all you notice it is an e-mail from yourself, usually they are just spoofing the address, which is really simple to do.

I get those all the time...

I doubt highly that you've been hacked. It's far more likely that a SPAMbot somewhere is spoofing based on likely default accounts for your domain.

Thanks

How do I check if it has come from my own mailserver?
