Photoshop for Idiots - HELP! - 6/13/2005 11:16:30
This should be simply, but sadly I haven't found PS to be very intuitive. I want to create an orange rectangle with 1-2 pixel black border. Should be easy, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the border. Feel free to laugh to yourself or out loud as you answer this.

Hi Duane I use PS Elements and I've had problems doing simple stuff like that too - odd isn't it? What I'd do (and there's probably an easier way) would be to make the orange box to the size you want and then zoom in a bit and use the line drawing tool set at 1px thickness and draw each border in.

choose your colour. with the rectangle tool (in TOOLS palette - looks like a rectangle ;) draw out your rectangle. in the layer palette click on the little 'f' to add a layer style and pick stroke. pick stroke colour and width

i think it's quite intuitive... or maybe it's only 'intuitive' when you get used to those sort of programs ;) then again *i* think DW is more intuitive than FP (eek not wanting to start anything off about THAT!). i certainly don't use everything in there - even back in version 3 there was stuff that other people were using with channels and stuff that i would never have thought of. i onec made a cool molten metal text header for a newsletter in photoshop but then i could never recreate :( personally i find fireworks a lot better for vector stuff - the vector stuff in PS is ok but, er not so intuitive: just the rest of the program is ok!

Ok everyone told you what do do correctly, but their was one problem. Be4 you do anything, make a new layer, then draw your box. Right click the layer, go to blending options, open it, then right click stroke, and mess with the options. I dont like using the magic wand to select things because it doesnt do it perfectly.
