Photoshop for Idiots - HELP! - 6/13/2005 11:16:30
This should be simply, but sadly I haven't found PS to be very intuitive. I want to create an orange rectangle with 1-2 pixel black border. Should be easy, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the border. Feel free to laugh to yourself or out loud as you answer this.

Hi Duane

I use PS Elements and I've had problems doing simple stuff like that too - odd isn't it?

What I'd do (and there's probably an easier way) would be to make the orange box to the size you want and then zoom in a bit and use the line drawing tool set at 1px thickness and draw each border in.

Make the box and fill it with the orange... then select the box using the magic wand, change the color selection to black, then:

Edit > Stroke - select the line width you want.

Stroke = outline

choose your colour. with the rectangle tool (in TOOLS palette - looks like a rectangle ;) draw out your rectangle.

in the layer palette click on the little 'f' to add a layer style and pick stroke. pick stroke colour and width

I get an alert saying, "Could not use the magic wand because the target is a fill layer."

I was just getting read to write, "What little 'f'?". Fortunately, I finally realized that the left-most icon is a circle with an "f" in the middle. May be time to change the resolution on the monitor. Or get glasses, :) :)

Thanks for the help. Am I the only one who finds PS less than completely intuitive?

You know you're a genius don't you - I've often wondered how to do this - ended up doing it the hard way.

Elements doesn't seem to have the little f thing that it's big brother has but you're method works beautifully.

Was it still selected? That's odd...

You might have to right click the layer in the layer palette and select "Rasterize" first...

and no, PS is anything but intuitive... remember this is considered an "Industrial Strength" program, intended for folks who went to school to learn how to play with it...

Photoshop is like most of MS Office... 90% of the users only use 10% of the available features...

:)

i think it's quite intuitive... or maybe it's only 'intuitive' when you get used to those sort of programs ;) then again *i* think DW is more intuitive than FP (eek not wanting to start anything off about THAT!). i certainly don't use everything in there - even back in version 3 there was stuff that other people were using with channels and stuff that i would never have thought of. i onec made a cool molten metal text header for a newsletter in photoshop but then i could never recreate :(

personally i find fireworks a lot better for vector stuff - the vector stuff in PS is ok but, er not so intuitive: just the rest of the program is ok!

Ok everyone told you what do do correctly, but their was one problem.

Be4 you do anything, make a new layer, then draw your box.

Right click the layer, go to blending options, open it, then right click stroke, and mess with the options.

I dont like using the magic wand to select things because it doesnt do it perfectly.

That's great advice... especially in Photoshop. Better to have too many layers and merge them later than to have too much done on a single layer.

I like to put "strokes" or outlines on their own layer as well... so that you can play with hiding different ones if you want to see different line styles or colors...
