FP03 Coding & Site Validation - 6/14/2005 8:45:27
Trying to optimize my site for SE position. Used W3C markup validation to scan my site. It did not like some of the FP coding.

xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"

Don't know whether this coding is a problem or not but haven't seen any other sites with it.

Did start my site with FP 2000, up-graded to FP 2002 and recently up-graded again to FP 2003.

Google Page Rank has me a 0 and apparently doesn't like my site. I checked other FP sites and they don't show a good Page Rank either. Very frustrated.

Any recommendations to cleaning up my site... www.witkosupplies.com. Just took some outfront advise and cleaned up the visual part of my site but need some assistance with the coding.

Was able to locate a clean up program but it is written in "C" and I can't open it.

Hi there

That bit of code is FP specific and will never validate unfortunately - it's one of those things you have to live with if you use FP. That said it shouldn'f affect your Google ranking - Google likes good code but it's more a case of good structure and code - not sure if that makes sense...

It loves <title> tags, it likes <h1> tags alot (you've got too much in your h1 tag - it might think your spamming ) and it pays attention to other heading tags. It also likes lots of content relevant to the search that was made - so you need to establish what your key phrases will be - discount stationery - business forms - whatever you choose and put it in your title tag and possibly your h1 tag and make sure it's repeated a few times within the text of the page too (without going crazy).

It can take up to 8 weeks for Google to list you so you may just need to wait a bit.

The portion in the head just says that your site can use xml and is made w/ Office progs, and says it meets w3 coding standards too.

Shared Schemas:

The elements in these schemas are shared by Microsoft Office Word 2003 and Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

quote:

urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office...

http://rep.oio.dk/Microsoft.com/officeschemas/SchemasIntros.htm

Example in use:
http://www.crookcounty.k12.or.us/baldrige/mission/district_mission_statements.htm

But if you do a search you will find hundreds of them, often using MS themes or templates.

Sharepoint servers may also be involved

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/spssdk/html/_sharepoint_portal_server_default_query.asp

You might like to have a look in here

If you are not using a Sharepoint server, then you can delete that and substitute whatever DTD is applicable. If the content is comprised of uncleaned office documents, then you will have to clean them up using whatever applications you have such as notepad, notetab, HTML Tidy etc. There are few short cuts.

Good luck,
Carol

PS As a first step you could download the Firefox browser, then add the Web Developer extension with HTML Tidy. This will point you in the right direction for cleaning your code.:)

Yep - my mistake - Caz is right, obviously cooking dinner and answering questions doesn't work properly!!

The gobledegook isn't FP stuff it's Office stuff - usually a result of Word pretending to be a web page editor!

Try getting rid of it and see if substituting this (from top of your page to the head tag) works at all without messing your page up.
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
<html><head>

(maybe keep a backup just in case!)

Not cooking dinner yet - but watch out when I do :)

The page that I had a quick look at appears to be using an MS Theme, so I would suggest making another template in it's stead, since that is probably the root of all evil. Not a small job either, but if the tutorials on this site ( blue navbar at the top of this page ) are used they can help greatly.

Now Tailslide, have you met Concorde yet? :)

I'm no Fp basher but themes are indeed evil......caveat emptor

Yes he does. It's like his policies - grounded.

Yes but unlike (most of) his policies is a crying shame.

I really would discourage the use of fp themes - very cluttered and hard to maintain. Fp's includes are a good way to make content manageable. you are in serious need of some css. your code is cluttered with (deprecated) font tags that would be more easily maintained in a seperate style sheet. just food for thought. have you looked at your code?

Preach on, brilliant line of attack against FP code and getting into the validation game slow but sure. :)
