Assigning UNs and PWDs - FP2000 - 6/16/2005 16:51:58
Hi, everyone!

Situation: I want to add a quiz section in a subweb on an existing site not yet in Front Page (have just set the site up on my machine as an FP site). Reason: so I can assign UNs and PWDs to ea. indiv. student coming to the site to take the tests.

I thought I could assign several UNs and PWDs using FP's Security/Permissions selection on the menu toolbar. But,
1) it's grayed out on my machine
2) my host informs me that the only way to do this is through the host's Control Panel and they would only provide 1 free password and I'd have to pay $5 for each additional password (with a ceiling of 11 total).

Questions:

1) Why is Security grayed out on my machine?

2) Is the Security/Permissions function available only to those working on the website (and has nothing to do with "outside" viewers accessing the site through their browsers)?

3) Is the limit on # of UNs and PWDs an issue only with my host? Would another host allow me to assign multiple UNs and PWDS to students, using FPs Security/Permissions function?

Any help in understanding this would be ~most~ appreciated.

Best,
Sharon

If you're using a Windows host, you might want to look at the Spooky Login. Then you won't have to worry about the host at all, just let SL handle all that stuff.

Hi Sharon, it eally depends on the application you were going to use for the quiz?
ie - is it written in vbscript (asp) ?
Could you let me know a bit more why you need to secure it and how the quiz will work?

Hi Spooky.
The quiz is already written (well, the first quiz) in ASP and javascript. Will have a couple of more quizzes (or so) and a final exam. The study pages and the tests need to be in a secured subdirectory as it will be a Food Handler Certification study and test for valid certification in that field. Certificates of completion will be mailed to students passing the final exam.

Need a system whereby the viewer clicks on a link which brings up a login authentication page where he/she needs to fill out a form with some personal information required, submits the form, and gets a unique UserID and Password assigned. Ea. student will probably need to reenter the protected directory using their unique ID and Pwd to study as needed. That ID # will be used throughout the certification process. They should be unique to each student/viewer.

Need to get this up and running ASAP, so the database part of this could be added later (after learning it) if somehow we could get a workable solution for some kind of UserID/Pwd arrangement now -- even if it means having the prospective student email me for a UserID and password (and I would use only one password if I'm locked into my host's requirements). Don't like that. Would rather have the whole thing set up right from the start.

So, where would this leave me as to FrontPage? Leave it alone, keep the present hard coded site? Or, use Front Page if I can figure out how to use Secure|Permissions. After what I've heard about the trouble to operate FP, Access and/or SQL together, don't know what to do.

Best,
Sharon
