Loading FP on more than 1 computer - 6/18/2005 4:59:16
Hi everyone,

Being the end of the financial year here in Australia, I've lashed out and purchased a new computer so that my existing one can become a spare should anything untoward happen. I've purchased a Dell Dimension 8400 with loads of numbers after it which mean different things like memory, speed and size I guess, basically i'm a computer technical dummy and will probably stay that way despite trying to learn things like that.

Anyway, I've decided not to have the system upgraded to Office 2003 as i can buy that cheaper than was offered by Dell and can install that myself, but I have some other questions regarding the software I have installed in this computer and whether I can legally transfer it to the new computer when it arrives.

Firstly FP 2002, I never did upgrade to 2003 and now I wonder whether I can reload FP 2002 into this new computer when it arrives? I've registered it when I loaded it onto the old computer, so I'm not sure but would like to know if I can do this without having to buy FP 2003?

I'd also prefer not to buy FP 2003 for another reason, it's half way through 2005 and i'm sure there must be a newer version ready to be released soon?

Winzip and Paint Shop Pro also, I need to buy them and have noticed that they're very cheap on ebay compared to what they are in the stores here. Does anyone see any problems with buying them from ebay?

Thanks

Nicole

I'm not quite sure how you stand. My understanding is that software like this is usually bought with a single user licence and I'd think provided you only have it on a single PC, you'd be okay.

I use eBay a lot and have never had any problems, though for software I'd suggest as always checking out the seller's feedback firstly, and buying from an eBay shops seller, avoiding like the plague anything that looks really, really cheap (usually means it's a copy - I got caught out by that once).

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8 at the moment, which I bought new from an Amazon Marketplace seller on Amazon for less than £20, a proper legal copy and everything, but because it's not the latest version it was a lot cheaper. My plan is to upgrade to PSP9 by getting the upgrade version to upgrade to the latest version. Here in the UK Amazon are selling the upgrade version for around £35. Their current price for the full version 9 I think is about £100, so even doing it the long way round and upgrading from v8, I'm saving around £40, so Amazon might be worth a try.

It depends on the local licensing - Im able to load it on 2 computers here, just registering online via the wizard.
Id be wary of buying online (software thats used) as there arent too many guarantees.
Especially Microsoft applications that have been preregistered.

Thanks Womble and Spooky,

I'll load FP on the new computer when it arrives, but i'll have to wait until the other software arrives before starting to use it full time in place of the existing computer.

Womble, PSP 9 is very cheap now on ebay also y'now. I'd also never buy used software.

The thing with trying to register FP once i've already registered it on another computer is that it seems unfair that I may have to buy a new copy when i'm not using the old one anymore. It's not like I have an office with both machines going at the same time.

Thanks again,

Nicole

It doesn't matter how many machines you install it on... as long as it's only installed on one PC at a time :)

In other words, uninstall it from your old PC before or right after installing it on the new one...

fp 2002 doens't do any sort of activating does it? if it does, then just try installing it on the new machine and activating it...I find 7 out of 10 times I can load the same program on multiple cpu's while activiating it and it goes through fine...also, since you have a new cpu, if you aren't going to use it on the old one, then simply uninstall / put on new one...if activation doesnt' work, all you have to do is call them and say its a new install ona new machine, only installed on this machine...in fact, you can technically do that for anything...they give you the number over the phone.

Or, there are a billion hacks out there that restrict the activation process...but, that of course brings up the legality issues and unsure on thoughts / views on that one...

I'd be very, very careful buying software from Ebay. Earlier this year Dan and I bought what we thought were good copies of WinXP and despite mailing the seller with questions about holograms etc they turned out to be copies - I could tell the minute I opened the CD case by the smell of fresh printing ink. They were supposed to be from a bankruptcy sale. We did get our money back but only after reporting the seller to Ebay. Watch out when someone offers several lots of the same thing, or says something like the first 2,3,4 or whatever bids will win.

That said I bought Office 2000 Pro a couple of years ago and there were no problems at all, everything was above board.
Congrats on the new pc and enjoy it :)
Cheers
Carol

As far as I am concerned, you pay for the software and if you chose to set up a "spare backup" PC with everything you have on it in case the main one goes down, I got no problem with that, what they have to say about it is another matter and one I really don't care about.

If Venger II goes down I can simply grab the RAM from it and slap it in Venger I and flick the juice button and away I go like nothing happened.

However, as only one machine is active at a time I am still kind of sticking by the rules. All you are doing is moving from one machine to another so you are well within your rights to do so.

In my eyes it is no different than burning a copy disc in case the original one goes pear shaped, it's all about a state of readiness and preparing for the unexpected. In our game we can't always afford 3 or 4 days off setting up a new machine with all the required apps, progs and O/S's. Hell some of us can't even afford to spend a day offline.

Hope the new machine is everything you want and need, have fun! :)

Thanks Caz, Dzirkelb & Bobby,

I notice that sellers selling copies of Paint Shop Pro and WinZip often have more than 1 copy to sell, I'll be cauutious about that.

Just back to Frontpage, I intend my old computer to be a backup for the new one if anything went wrong with that. So what I'm saying is that I'd like the 2 computers to be as similar to each other as possible. I've missed the boat with FP 2003 and I'm figuring that I'm surely closer to buying a new release as it's already midway through 2005, surely FP is working on a newer version to be released soon.

So with that said, I'm only going to be using 1 computer at a time and would like FP 2002 on both computers for the time being. I'm trying to find a comparison, would it be like having one top that I wear with 2 different skirts? I don't go and buy an exact same top just because I want to wear it with another skirt? If I ruined one of the skirts I could still wear the top with the other skirt couldn't I?

I'm not pulling a scam, I'm a small business who can't afford to buy two copies of every piece of software I use as an insurance.

Nicole

load fp on the new machine and then activate with your codes. usually, the second attempt to activate will work. if not, activate by phone but...tell them you have removed from first computer
