IP address problems - 6/19/2005 12:27:13
ok, i understand most software and in-the-computer things, but im not too educated on the outside, hardware things. So im alittle lost on what to do.

Today when i got on my computer zonealarm alerts me that a new IP address is trying to access the internet, i cancel, not knowing what it is. Well it seems that zonealarm canceled my actual IP Address. Well, i shutdown zonealarm, and tried to renew it. It failed. I tried recreating my connection with my other computers, no good. I use roadrunner. And i have a netgear wireless modem. I have Windows XP home edition. I looked on the internet and people talked about DHDC(or something close) but i had no idea what they were talking about :). What can i do so i can reconnect back to the internet and back to my other computers? (btw it was one of the branched off computers of the connection, not the main one. The main one, and my xbox works fine.)

help! And be patient with me :)

- Only person that can cancel your IP is your ISP...

If you are talking about how ZA blocks an IP address/network, you can always open up the configuration and find the network/IP and put it in the "Allow" stage.

well now after feeling like a complete idiot, i fixed it by simply turning the modem off and back on and accepting the IP address with zone alarm! Thanks for being there to help, and sorry for wasting your time, you can delete this thread.

1. Not going to delete the thread as it may help someone else.

2. Don't panic, we all feel like idiots occasionally and it's nice to see it's not me for a change! :)

But now when I am able to get on which is hardly ever it says someone is copying my ip address so i get out just as fast and shut everything down. I have a main computer hooked up to a network with a laptop that is wireless they both are saying the same thing. please help

Hi and Welcome to Outfront

Have you inadvertantly configured both to use the same IP address? It's easy to check: turn one of them off and see if the message goes away. If it does, turn the other back on and see if it returns.

Does it say "copied" or does it say "a duplicate"?

Can you check either machine for the TCP/IP configurations? Are the IP addresses hardcoded or is it set to "automatically get IP address"?

it says it is being recorded how do i check if it is hardcoded or is it set to "automatically get IP address". It doesn't happen anywhere else but i really do not go to any other chat room except yahoo. I do take some online classes but it has not messed with that in anyway. Only seems to be on yahoo.

is that what it says? maybe just that yahoo chat is recording your ip address - not a big thing

Sounds to me like some malware or exploit has infected your computer. Have you run any spyware / virus checkers?
