AMP via XAMPP - 6/24/2005 11:46:17
AMP stands for Apache (web server), MySQL (database) and php (server side scripting)

In order to develop a website using these features you have to have them installed and configured on your development computer... or upload all changes to a hosted server each time you want to check a change or test a new feature.

Using XAMPP ( http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html ) for Windows provides an easy graphic installer and configuration utility for getting the whole works running on your machine.

Plus it provides a simple command panel that lets you start and stop each service as you need it.

The best part? It's 100% free!

The following article gives some insight on it... this is written from a Linux users perspective, note that the shell commands given here are easily handled through a GUI on the windows side...

http://programming.newsforge.com/programming/05/06/16/204210.shtml?tid=48&tid=74&tid=130&tid=132

I've been using XAMPP for developing on the AMP platforms for several weeks (learning Apache and php along the way) and it couldnt have been easier.

Happy coding!

Hi Bobby,

Great article. Now we need one that's easy to use that replaces the horrible IIS of FP. Got one of those?

LLLuneeeee :)

funny you should post that - I saw a headline last week that said "microsoft devises strategy aginst LAMP" and scratched my head - the L is for Linux

yeppers

I'm curious how they plan to combat a powerful, widely used, time proven development platform that is also 100% free..?

I'm sure IIS, .NET and MS-SQL will do the job just fine... but at best I'm left buying a copy of Win XP pro (an extra $100 over Home) so I can run IIS on my dev. machine.

Not to mention I'm then relegated to Windows only servers... whereas AMP can be used on Linux or Windows servers with ease.

And it only takes a minute to install and configure... I have yet to get IIS to work properly on my P4 at home. Gave up and turned it off after I installed XAMPP.

:)

good question..ballmer said that their old approach when taking on sun and novell was "we are better and cheaper". naturally that wont fly so their new approach will be "we are better and if you take tco into account, we are cheaper" the next day, I saw a full page add in PC magazine pounding that very theme.....

On the server side they may have some fight left, but for the individual developer or small business developer you really can't beat a product that is free to download and works right out of the box :)

As far as TCO goes, AMP is still cheaper... either on Linux or Windows... zero cost, zero setup problems, zero configuration problems, zero support needed! (IME)

And if you ever do run into a problem there is a very helpful community of people involved with and using the software who are there to answer your questions for free!

MS had something with PWS and ASP... but now they charge for MS-SQL and IIS licenses so right from the start you're farther behind in TCO.

(Now, throw in that most Linux distros can run on hardware that XP would simply sneer at and you can make further arguments... but I'll leave that for another thread...)

For the record, I hope MS does come up with something...

That's my favorite thing about FOSS, it literally forces the "Big Boys" to innovate and compete. I would love to see Redmond put something out that is equally as good.

I tried installing XAMPP but ran into difficulties and found it difficult to find the help I needed on the software's homepage - can't quite remember now, but isn't it German - possibly Dutch?

In the end I went with WAMP which went straight in without any problem.

Thanks for posting. Of course there is also www.easyphp.org in French.

What I don't get is why there is nothing in English. Kind of hurts when one's unilingual. I had to really search hi and low for easyphp but finding it was a lifesaver.

I have been able to do all my testing locally. Perhaps one of these days I'll test XAMPP.

Now, what's a WAMP?

WAMP - Windows, Apache, MySQL, php

I kind of invented that one... :)

Since the AMP trifecta works equally as good on Win and Linux they both might as well have a nifty achronym :)

It is true that the easyphp website is mainly French but the program suite itself can be installed in a host of languages, including English, of course !

Yeah... like old Danny-boy invented the Internet... :)

... somehow I don't think that came across the way it sounded in my head... :)
