AMP via XAMPP - 6/24/2005 11:46:17
AMP stands for Apache (web server), MySQL (database) and php (server side scripting) In order to develop a website using these features you have to have them installed and configured on your development computer... or upload all changes to a hosted server each time you want to check a change or test a new feature. Using XAMPP ( http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html ) for Windows provides an easy graphic installer and configuration utility for getting the whole works running on your machine. Plus it provides a simple command panel that lets you start and stop each service as you need it. The best part? It's 100% free! The following article gives some insight on it... this is written from a Linux users perspective, note that the shell commands given here are easily handled through a GUI on the windows side... http://programming.newsforge.com/programming/05/06/16/204210.shtml?tid=48&tid=74&tid=130&tid=132 I've been using XAMPP for developing on the AMP platforms for several weeks (learning Apache and php along the way) and it couldnt have been easier. Happy coding!

I'm curious how they plan to combat a powerful, widely used, time proven development platform that is also 100% free..? good question..ballmer said that their old approach when taking on sun and novell was "we are better and cheaper". naturally that wont fly so their new approach will be "we are better and if you take tco into account, we are cheaper" the next day, I saw a full page add in PC magazine pounding that very theme.....

I tried installing XAMPP but ran into difficulties and found it difficult to find the help I needed on the software's homepage - can't quite remember now, but isn't it German - possibly Dutch? In the end I went with WAMP which went straight in without any problem.

Thanks for posting. Of course there is also www.easyphp.org in French. What I don't get is why there is nothing in English. Kind of hurts when one's unilingual. I had to really search hi and low for easyphp but finding it was a lifesaver. I have been able to do all my testing locally. Perhaps one of these days I'll test XAMPP. Now, what's a WAMP?

It is true that the easyphp website is mainly French but the program suite itself can be installed in a host of languages, including English, of course !
