Transferring Files - 6/27/2005 2:07:56
I have successfully connected my XP PC to my XP laptop (via crossover cable) and can see both machines fine. I want to be able to transfer large files (up to 2GB) from the PC to the laptop. When transferred, delete them from the PC, and at a later date transfer them back from the laptop (effectively using the laptop as an external drive). I'm stumped as to how I can do this - any help would be most appreciated.

You simply need a cable for this, as well as some cheap software.

I actually have an old box w/ cd/manuals/cable that does this. If you don't mind using it, I will go find the name and give you a price to buy it from me.

Thanks for your reply. I am in Australia so any transaction might be tricky. Any info you can give me would be great.

Ok, then it wouldn't be wise costwise to ship to the outback!

Here are three solutions:
1) Put old drive inside new computer, and transfer it over.
2) Connect computers using a USB cable, and then setup a network to transfer the files
3) Goto a local store and purcahse a transfer program that comes with a data cable & software

#1/#2 will not transfer over your actual settings, such as XP themes, Programs, etc, #3 usually has the ability to transfer this information.

Btw, welcome to the forum! :)

It sounds as if you are complicating the issue?

Arent we just talking about changing the 'share' properties of a folder so that both PC's can see it for transfering files?

eg - in Windows explorer, right click on a folder > properties > sharing

unclesean,

I've done this successfully. Tip: change the jumper setting on the XP PC Drive from Master to Slave when installing on the XP Laptop.

If you're just transferring files, and can see both over the network, just drag and drop...
