CavalierLady -> Ready for Your Review (6/27/2005 22:25:53)

Hi there....

I guess I'm ready to have y'all take a look at my site. Except for some links and webring links that are pending approval and permission, everything is just about done.

I've worked non-stop on this for several weeks now, and I feel like I could sleep for a month!

It's heavy on graphics, so regular dial-up may be slower than you would like and I realize that. Viewers of this genre who are used to seeing this type of content, will be used to this.

"Tailslide" has helped a lot and been very gracious and kind to respond to my many email questions, and I am grateful to her for all her help. Thank you to Tailslide and to all of you who've offered so many helpful suggestions.

I tried to add an email gif just now on the about page, based on the previous email link that Tailside gave to me, but I've not done it right, because the gif does not show up. You'll be able to see the source code and maybe tell me what I've done wrong. Other than that, I haven't seen any problems, but perhaps other brower users can point out any problems that they might encounter.

Thanks, and looking forward to your opinions...

Maria

The E-mail gif shows up for me in FF and IE6 and both work in that they open the e-mail window. One thing that definitely does need changing on both it and the text link slightly - and this was me typing fast and thinking slowly (hey that's never happened before!) is this:

Right at the start of both e-mail addresses:
<a [E–Mail me] href=

Needs to be:
<a title="[E–Mail me]" href=

Doh! (*slaps head*) sorry!

You should be able to do "find and replace" on this "string" so you don't have to go back through and find 'em all.

Can't get through to your site for some reason.[:)]

Bet Tailslide has put some mysterious code in which makes it invisible to mere mortals like me. May even be a special Doctype!!!!!!![;)]

womble -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 4:30:30)

Fabulous! The artwork is fantastic!

Just two teeny comments from me. On the galleries page the text "...Click on an image corresponding to the gallery number to enter the gallery.", on the right hand side looks a bit out of place sitting there all on its own but I think if it's going to be there it needs a little padding/margin on the left side as it's butted right up against the central table.

The galleries were loading incredibly slowly for me even on broadband - though having said that, they were worth the wait! Excellent! [:)]

golfer -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 4:52:21)

Ok. I've got the site now. Thought I'd been barred for a moment.

What fantastic artwork. Loved your site and a pleasure to work through. Once onto the home page I didn't care about load times as I was looking forward to exploring what else you had created.

The only thing that I would comment on is the padding around your picture on the 'About' page. I think the wording comes that fraction too close. Hey but thats minor.

One big thing that upset me was that you have put Helena's name in the site. OMG, we will all have to put a link in our sites now.[:D] [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Oi! I didn't touch the DOCTYPE - go look and see if you don't believe me!

All I did was stick in a bit of CSS on the index page, debug a bit of JS and pass on the e-mail code thing (which I managed to stuff up as you can see above). Maria did the rest all by herself - she's just a very nice lady who's generous with her praise.

As previously mentioned by someone else on another thread, Tailslide baiting is a cruel and heartless sport. Mere mortals such as yourself should be honoured that you are even allowed to post messages on the same page as such knowledgeable beings [;)]

Go on laugh then...

CavalierLady -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 7:29:33)

Good Morning Everyone......

Thanks for your reviews, responses, and for taking the time to have a peek! [:)]

I only did what I would have done in any other area of my life, and that's to thank someone who helped me out. [:)]

I was afraid to mess with the padding on the about page. It wasn't word wrapping the way I thought, and I was unsure about how it would look to others who view at only 800x600 or some other size. I could play around with it some.

Which brings up another question, ...if I fiddle with a page, is there a way to tell FP to ~not~ publish a page of my choosing?

Oh yes... the galleries page... I think that bit of text stuck at the top of the table on the left side and right side looks strange indeed, all by itself, but again... how to change so it looks the same at different screen resolutions. I had a time (and a half) getting all that to line up right and get the text in front of the buttons and get the buttons to all line up in a straight row (column) and I was afraid to mess with that text too much for fear of muffing up the way the whole page looks. There is some kind of JavaScript that keeps a bit of text floating in the center of the page, no matter how far you scroll down, but I didn't know how that would work in conjunction with this fancy script for the images. I clicked on the darned buttons I don't know how many times myself, instead of clicking on the images! [:D] (so I added that bit of click on the image on the right side).

After clearing my cache, it wasn't too terribly slow, but I'm on dsl, and I don't know about regular dial up or someone who's on 28.8. That might be a bit much, but then, it's a site about graphics, so??

This morning I can see the email gif. Last night I couldn't. (???) And I didn't change anything. But I'll look into that bit of change you said I needed to make to the code. Thanks, Tailslide.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you like the images. I just hope the site looks good. I tried to keep the silly stuff out, and it was tempting.... looking at all the fun scripts, games and puzzles, blinking gifs, trailing mouse cursors and such that are available out there. But I didn't think that applied to this kind of site. If I do my research and offer prints for sale in the future (that coming soon link that is not yet active), I didn't want to get too cheesy. :)

Thanks so much..... so far, so good. Whew! I was afraid y'all wouldn't rake me over the coals. [:D]

Maria

I too spent a while clicking on the button! I tried this locally with two of your images and it worked- but don't know if it'll work on other browsers or not:

Where you've got:
<a href="#" onmouseover="modifyimage('dynloadarea', 0)"><img border="0" src="images/gallery1.jpg" width="130" height="60" style="margin-bottom:5px" alt="Gallery 1"></a><br>

Change the "#" to the destination of the click like this:

<a href="gallery_one.htm" onmouseover="modifyimage('dynloadarea', 0)"><img border="0" src="images/gallery1.jpg" width="130" height="60" style="margin-bottom:5px" alt="Gallery 1"></a><br>

Edit: seems to work on FF, IE and Opera 7.

Thats good of you. Just couldn't resist a bit of a tease with Helena[;)].

I wish you every success[:)]

CavalierLady -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 7:54:26)

Ok, I see that change and it would be simple enough to do, but what exactly does changing the "#" to gallery one, etc, do to the web page?

Tailslide -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 7:59:34)

The # in the link currently is just to prevent the link actually going anywhere if clicked upon - probably most people just use it for thumbnail images showing a large image without a link behind it. In theory if you put the link in there when people click on the button it'll go to the page you specify as if it was a normal button. They'll still be able to click on the picture too.

CavalierLady -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 8:02:58)

Ok... that would solve the problem of everyone, including myself, lol, clicking on the buttons instead of the image... but wouldn't that defeat the entire purpose of using this fancy script in the first place??

Tailslide -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 8:43:55)

You'd still get the same hover effect and they could still click on the picture - it's just that if people are clicking on the buttons anyway then you might as well give 'em what they want! Plus from an accessibility point of view - people who aren't using a mouse to navigate can tab through the buttons and press enter to go to a gallery.

CavalierLady -> RE: Ready for Your Review (6/28/2005 8:55:08)

Well I do see your point there. And it never occured to me that some people don't or cannot use a mouse. Good point! I'll "think on it".

Thanks, :) Maria

jules213 -> RE: Ready for Your Review (7/9/2005 21:33:22)

I know it's a little late in the day, but i've only just found the site, so apologies, but if i may pass a comment...

a) probably just a work in progress at the moment, but the galleries didn't work for me, just kept on taking me to the top of the page...!?

b) The navigation options on the front page with the rollovers look lovely, but my second thought (after, wow they look lovely) was how would they be implimented in the site when there is more page content.

What i (personally) found a little irritating is that the subsequent navigation is only at the bottom of the page, meaning if i didn't want that page i had to scroll down. a lazyman's gripe, but i look at so many sites that it is the little things that are important to my using of a site.

Also, the navigation links at the bottom of the subsequent pages aren't in the same order as they are on the front page:

Front: home about galleries liks
Rest: Home galleries about links

again, only a tiny anal gripe, but i tend to like things to be in order as it makes my use of teh site easier.

Sorry to pick up on such small things, but they're what struck me.

I really like you gel buttons by the way, much better than my attempt... back to the drawing board for me [:)]

Just on that issue - Maria's got another version of the CSS image map with another option on it. Any further sections beyond that can be added with about 15 minutes fiddling of the CSS/graphics - it's a definition list with the graphics as a background (Stu Nicholls code).

CavalierLady -> RE: Ready for Your Review (7/14/2005 9:29:27)

Good Morning...

Sorry to be so late... just seeing this message.

Yes, it is a work in progress and more things will be added later.

I have announced the site to several "communities" that I belong to, and only one person out of hundreds commented about the buttons. After I pointed out that one must click on the image rather than the button, which is plainly stated on the page, there was no problem. No one mentioned not being able to see anything or not being able to reach interior sections. So I can't say what your problem might have been or what prevented you from navigating where you wanted to go.

I'm sure I'll be tweaking little things here and there as time goes by. Thanks for pointing out some of the smaller details. Many sites have that navigation at the bottom of the page only. Only if one is interested enough to hang around and view the whole page will they see the navigation. If they aren't interested, they won't. Simple as that. I didn't want to be too redundant and repetitive, and also thinking about page load time as these pages are slow enough as they are image intense for dial up users.

Thanks,

Maria
