Changing background colour of title popup - 6/30/2005 23:28:13
Is it possible to change the background colour of an img title popup (description) in a web page using CSS?

It is a pale yellow colour on my computer by default. I can change it locally by going to Display > Properties > Appearance and changing the Tool Tip background, but I want to change it only in this web site to fit in with the colour scheme, so everyone sees the new colour.

If it can't be changed using CSS, is there some other way of showing popup text descriptions for an image without resorting to javascript?

To my knowledge, you cannot change the appearance of the tooltip that generates from an alt or title tag. See this for more information:

However, there are alternatives out there for custom tooltips, some that use solely CSS. Do a google on custom tooltip css and that should yield some useful results.

Hi Duane,

Many thanks for the guidance as to what to search for! :)

I found exactly what I wanted here:

Thanks again.

<edit>Ooops, just found it works in Firefox but not IE :) ... however, I'm working on it </edit>

Typically - I don't believe that IE understands the :before or :after child thingy.

Funnily enough I saw this yesterday on istockphoto.com which is a JS tooltip (on steroids!) which may be some help if you can't get the lovely CSS to work.

Haven't got the CSS to work yet. As you mention, I have already discovered that IE doesn't recognise the pseudo classes except when it is a link. :)

I have started to look at JS which I really wished to avoid if possible.

Spot on! Although it is spoiled a bit by the ALT text overlaying it.

I think I'll end up combining a couple of scripts to get the effect and detail I want.

Many thank for the tips :)

You can do pure css pop-ups. This one (hover over menu links) puts it below the menu but you can put it wherever you want.

Neat! That's perfect thanks jaybee. :)

It's even better than Tool tips as it stays put till you move the mouse away. Tool tips sometime disappear before you finish reading it all.

Ahh, yes. That was the one I had seen before. Thanks for the link jaybee. I must not have used the same search words last time I came across it.
