Broken web building system - 7/1/2005 7:08:56
Hello, In short, the machine on which I have been running Frontpage 2002 for a couple of years and which houses all my webs and Themes etc has become almost unusable. Too long a story ... but it has virtually ceased to communicate both on the Internet and across my in-house MS network; and I cannot use it to publish webs. I have started to rebuild the machine and I hope to do so without losing all my data and application files. In the meantime, I've managed to send a vital web folder to a second machine on my network (which is working fine) in the hope that I can publish from there. The folder is only some 10MB in size but it took 8 HOURS to transfer across my network - so you'll appreciate just how slowly the 'broken' machine is performing. Nevertheless, the folder appears to have arrived OK and seems to be a complete copy of my web. I've installed a completely new copy of Frontpage 2002 on the second machine and it appears to be successfully reading my transferred web folder. However ... all is not well !! All my files display correctly in Frontpage 2002 as do the Navigation and Hyperlink Views. I've even seen the 'Preview in Browser' view work - once ! But now, that view now seems to be 'stuck' showing me only a folder view of all my web files. When I try to 'Publish Web' I can make the link to my hosting provider's server and the login works. I see the remote web space and the local files. But the 'publish' process stops fairly early into its cycle ... telling me that components of the web's Theme are failing to transfer in some way and certain files cannot be created etc. etc. Logically, that's understandable and I suspect I need to move other files from the 'broken' system to the 'new home' for my web files. Alternatively, there may be a way for me to persuade the new local host machine to understand more about the Theme I'm using. Maybe by publishing locally BEFORE trying to publish to the Web ? Can anyone help me through this painful process, please ?

On your second machine in FP, can you open your website(s) live on the server and publish from there back down to your second machine? You should then get all the files necessary for that site.

We first went down the line that the remote server was at fault and that led us to clean out the web on the host; preparing to start again from here. Ooh, ouch Apart from copying whole folders and their subfolders, making sure that all their contents are there, to CD you could also try "Publishing" from within FP to CD. There's a good article on this by abbeyvet, if I can locate it for you. It's meant for CD presentations, but is also handy for backup. The main thing to remember with this is that you publish to your cd burning software folders, not straight to CD. Got it. Written by one of our members and now a standard text http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/assistance/HA010429341033.aspx Ignore what is said about disabling Extensions and changing the navigation etc, you only need to go to Step 8: Get ready to burn your CD. Doing this means that you will get all the FP specific info that is needed for future publishing. You may have some issues later, but they can be dealt with at the time. HTH Carol

Thanks kitka, same one now relocated in the wonderful MS filing cabinet. I am just so glad that MS saw the sense of reinstating that article.

Thanks to both Caz and Kitka, I'll spend my lunch hour with the document and give it a try whem I get my hands on the CDRWriter. Any further thoughts will be welcome. If you want a feel for the site it might be visible in Google's caches.
