Windows XP and USB Port problems - 7/8/2005 21:42:07
Just when I thought my upgrade from ME to XP went well, I think I have a problem with the USB port. When I was using ME, I connected to the internet through the USB port through a 10/100 USB Network Adapter. Since I upgraded to XP I installed a network card so I no longer need the USB adapter.
The problem now is that I can no longer hook up to my Canon digital camera through the USB port. When I try, It locks up my computer and the only way to get going again is to disconnect the camera and reboot the computer.
It seems like the problem is in the USB operation. Anyone have any ideas?

it might be that the drivers for the camera need to be upgraded to accommodate xp - i had a similar problem

According to Canon...
"This driver is PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) compliant the WIA driver for Windows XP made by Canon.
Important
If you connect your camera to the Computer (OS: Windows XP) with a USB cable, it is not necessary to install the driver as your camera supports PTP and the standard driver of Windows XP. "
So it looks like the driver is already contained in Windows XP.

The driver might be in XP, but it is either a bad driver, or you need an updated one for it to work correctly.
Like Dan said, you need to update your drivers.
If you update it, and it still does not work, update the network card driver as well.

I tried to install the drivers but when I reach the step that asks me to plug the camera into the computer, the computer freezes and I have to reboot to get it going again. I have a USB mouse that has an adapter to allow it to plug into the serial plug on the computer. When I remove the adapter and plug it directly into the USB port, it freezes and I have to reboot. I think the problem lies in the USB port but I can't seem to find anything wrong when I use the troubleshooting guides.

If two devices cause the PC to crash so spectacularly it, it could be a physical problem with the USB port - check for damage to the contacts; not unusual. Check the camera on another PC - perhaps a local web cafe or a friend's if you can. It's unlikely that any software troubleshooter will find a problem with it as it's only causing problems when a device is plugged in. I take it it's the only USB port on the PC? You can buy PCI USB cards for a few pounds/dollars from any PC store - they're not difficult to fit and should give you full USB2 access in to the bargain!

Thanks jabee. I recently found a site that specializes in USB issues:
USBMan
They have suggested that my problem is the result of BIOS problems and that I need to update my BIOS. I'm still reading about BIOS prior to upgrading. I don't want to screw anything up. I'll let you know how the upgrade goes and if it fixes the problem.

I have had sucess doing this with many USB devices.
1. Disconnect the device in question.
2. Uninstall the driver *completely*.
3. Reboot.
4. Install the driver from CD or download *before* you re-connect the device.
5. Connect USB device.
As a rule of thumb now, I always install USB device drivers before I ever attempt to plug the device in. Seems to work almost every time for me for problem devices.

Another USB Problem - - My Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI add-in card stopped working when I added a 2.0 hub to it. Computer locked up.
I will try rdouglass' suggestion.

Problem Solved.
I moved the card to a different slot and all is OK now.

the number of times I've found a PCI card (or an ISA one, back in the old days...) suddenly starts to work after being popped into a different slot! I've found some USB devices that won't work in any other port than the one they were originally installed in too. Undocumented features; don't ya love them...
