bend me, shake me... - 7/9/2005 21:59:20
hi all,

ok, found the forum today, had a pleasant introduction to the minds wandering these cyberhalls, so i thought i'd put my baby to the proverbial (and hopefully only proverbial) sword.

There are still a few accessibility issues to sort out, but beyond that i believe all is well... i am proud to say i knew about DOCTYPES before finding this forum, and happy to say i now know more about them after my first foray (and hopefully have them right now). Just thought i'd mention that because if i have got it right, then DOCTYPE wouldn't be mentioned in this post, and that would almost seem inappropriate... :)

Hopefully i've made things so that coming to grips with the site and navigating it is simple, but i'm sure you'll let me know.

And finally, i am aware <embed> is deprecated and that the homepage doesn't validate. Not even sending a mail to W3C has offered up a solution (and no, you can't use <object> alone if you want it to run in NN etc, as IE hijacks it with Active-X... and there's a surprise). The validated link will disappear, but at the moment it's there for ease so i can check the rest of the code on that page.

Ok, i'll shut up now:

very pleasant indeed. Few grammatical errors i.e. which/what but apart from that it was very good.

I viewed in Firefox 1.04 1028x768 on 1MB Cable.

I like the use of video (and I usually don't).

the whole flash/validating thing can be a pain - have you seen this article: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/ sorry if you've already seen it!!

The only thing I can think of to say is that you've got a lot of your CSS styles embedded into your pages which makes it harder to edit them globally from one place.

Oh thought of something else! You mention you're still working on the accessibilty side of things so you may already be thinking about this - but I'd put a text version of your links in down the bottom of the page somewhere just in case images are turned off. This is a neat, CSS pipe-separated horizontal menu that I've used: http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/horizontal32.htm

Hi Jules,

Nice site and great idea, congrats!

Two picky things though, clicking the "Contact" link started my email up, i personally don't like this, I expect a contact page to appear with address, phone, email details etc. Have you thought about changing that link to "Email Us"? That way people should be more aware that that link is going to start their email program.

I think you could perhaps add a little more padding around the text in most pages as it's a little too close to the border/film edge.

Told you they were picky things. Welcome to Outfront also.

Nicole

Thanks guys, and picky is good.

Have padded the edges, and it does look neater. also changed to E-MAil US (didn't think of Contact being written details, but good point).

Eli, i'm embarressed to say i can't see my gramatical errors. i see the which and what but my brain must have gone soft because i can't see what's wrong with them...?!?

Text links at the bottom (couldn't make the script you posted to centre Tailspin, so have donw my own hatchet version) and your right about the embeded styles, partly still learning (this was my first foray into writing properly) and a little bit of tiredness/laziness.

Thanks for the pointer on embedding, unfortunately the embeded file is .rm so the flash workaround doesn't work (although i may end up putting it in in flash.)

Basically, this is an unresolvable issue until either w3c come up with a solution such as undeprecating <embed> (which it doesn't look like they're interested in doing) or the browsers pull the fingers out of their proverbials and meet in some middle ground.

Thanks for your pointers, and should anyone else notice anything, please let me know.

And finally, thanks Nicole re: the idea. It is my main work (now) and finally looks like it is taking off. The young people love doing it and it is so empowering of them to have a platform which has the potential to be engaged with (and they've some good things to say to boot). The response all round has been good. I'm making a second episode with the Youth Offending Team, and friday just gone we had a screening of the first at a local community centre so the young people could get their certificates of acheivement and a copy, and the local MP was there and said he'd try and get it into the papers and a Youth Services Officer was there, who wants me to make more... sorry to go on, but it's been a bit of a struggle gettng it together and trying to get it off the ground, so this week just gone has been a good one, and i am still beeming at how well the young people did with the first show... anyway, thanks.

Cheers all,

Jules
