Hi again

I'm currently @ my clients trying to publish their new site, and keep getting the message "You cannot copy the frontpage web to itself. Please choose a different location." Any ideas????????

I'm editing the site, and attempting to publish changes only. The site is @ www.sjpa.com and that is the address I enter in the specify location to publish to drop down, and then I hit the publish button.

Hi, Adrian -

When you are live on the server, once you save, the page is instantly updated. You may need to click refresh to see changes in your browser, but the changes are there.

No need to publish to itself.

Linda

Try Tools > recalculate hyperlinks.

It is not possible to publish a web to itself. If you are working live on the server, it will be saving all the changes and does not need to be published. FP knows it is working on the server and will treat the elements as if they have been published.

You can publish from the server to your hard drive to have the latest copy. You can then open that copy of the web site and then publish to the server.

Linda

It's been about 2 years since I worked with publishing and counters. So when i made the changes the counter had gone back to 1. I set it to start at 10089 (# on old counter), but it's not working; so i assumed it needed to be published. Any ideas on the counter?

Thanks everyone for the help!!

You will need to go in live and reset it. No publishing involved.

By the way...I just tried to look at the site. All I'm getting is a black square on a white page with some stuff below the black square?

The counter is updated each time I clicked refresh... seems to be working fine.

Be sure not to leave spaces in your file names.

NO: splash page.html
YES: splashpage.html
YES: splash_page.html

Sandy uses Netscape... you should probably take a look at the site in that.

Thanks all for the advice. I published back to my hard drive, made the changes and published back to the server. Sandy, if you should happen to read this, is the page still black, if so, what is your browser type?

Hi Adrian.

It's still not working. You have a space in the file name, splash page.swf. See Linda's reference to that earlier. Maybe if you correct that, it will work. The space will often cause Netscape to balk.

Something else you may want to keep in mind...if people have graphics turned off or are behind a firewall, they will not have access to your site because of the Flash dependant entrance. It would be good if you added a text link to enter as well.

I'm using Netscape 4.7.

I just installed Netscape 6.01 and it works fine. So you think it could be the space, I'm on my way back to the office to try that.

lol... I've removed the space in the name. As for the text links... I've got an index page that loads before splash_page.html that checks for an installed version of flash: leading the user to pages with an option to upgrade (if needed) or download flash or go to the alternate index page. Thanks!

Hi Adrian
I'm on a fast connection but no joy - I tried to look under opera - gave it five minutes then stopped. Tried to look at from another machine with firewall settings set to low using internet explorer and opera - same timeframe so stopped.

Seems as if the server has gone down. I left the building last night, everything was fine, tested it at home and it was fine. When I had a look this morning the whole site was down. I'll be checking it when I get off work.
