Pages are losing their content - 7/12/2005 15:26:55
HELP I created a part of my site using FrontPage 2003. I uploaded everything via FTP to my server.
All is well. It works fine.:)

Today, I needed to edit a few things on some of the pages. I also wanted to add Press Release pages and change some of the services pages I was using.

Well, I had a service page looking really good. I saved it and everything was fine. I then deleted the original page. I did this to a second page.
I also inserted my header page into all of the press release pages and the new services pages.

So now I went in to preview the site in browser, and lo and behold, the header is gone on every single page as well as the conten from the two services pages I had created. :)

I down loaded the original two pages and the header file/page from my server. I was able to regain the content on the two pages. But the header keeps opening as a regular template looking page with all of the spots to add navigation to it, etc.
:)
I had an old site I had been doing, with the same header in it. So I imported that file into my site and named it header, put it in the includes file, and it looks good.
As long as the file was open, I could put the header into the pages. So that was good. Until I closed out of FrontPage and reopened it. The header is gone AGAIN!

I could just cry, because after eight months, this site is ready to go live, and now this!

Please, does anyone have any idea what to do to fix this?
By the way, the original site has been created by hand, by me. To insert the press release pages and the new services pages, I added the corporate template to my site, deleted all the unnecessary pages including the index page which didn't have anything to do with my site.

Could the file for the template be corrupt or something?
Do I need to reinstall FrontPage.
I have been working on this for the past eight hours and I am getting nowhere! :)

HELP PLEASE!!!

are all the pages at the same level in the web root? Or are some seperated into other directories?

If you're working live on the server I would guess that something got lost in between you and the host... accidental deletion maybe?

If you keep a local copy as well then you should have a backup to work from...

It could also be related to your FPSE's... does restarting the server help?

The problem I am having is on my computer. Whenever I change something, the content disapears.
The site itself is OK right now, because I haven't tried uploading any of the new files.
The problem is in FrontPage itself.

Are you using shared borders within frontpage for your header?

By the way - why are you FTP'ing?
If using frontpage content, then you may be causing the problem by not publishing?

FTP'ing?

That could be enough to crash FP includes or shared borders... hadn't thought of that :)

I ftp'd because when I attempted to publish it through Front Page I kept getting errors.
I can't remember what they were now, but nothing I did worked.
After initially uploading with the FTP everything works. But when I uploaded a changed file, I had to do it to three different locations: _overlay/_vti, the root directory, and _derived.

The problem I am having now with content disappearing is happening in the site in FrontPage.
I put it in, save, close out of it, and when I open the file again, the content is gone. The only things left are the side include page, and the footer.

I'm confused because when I first did the ftp everything was fine. The site still is actually.

Forgive my ignorance, but I really am not sure if I am using shared borders.
How do I know?

Do you mean the losing the content? My computer is the only place I am having problems with.
The content doesn't even stay on the FP created pages long enough for me to upload it to my site.

Aha!

Now we're getting somewhere...

I'm not sure what it means, but I'm less confused than before. I thought the pages on your server were having the trouble...

Okay, now at least it's one of two things... either software or hardware. :)

Have you tried uninstalling, and reinstalling Frontpage? (I'm not recommending you do this yet, but it may be something to try later)

Are you able to open one of your .htm pages in notepad and make changes to the content?

OK, I took one of my pages, opened it in notepad, and made a minor change to it, and saved it with a different name.
If I view it locally in the browser it looks fine, even the header is there.
However, when I open it in FrontPage, the header is gone.
So far, the content is still there, even where I made my changes.
But I tried to create a brand new page, and once again, lost the content.
I thought about reinstalling Front Page, but I'm afraid that if I uninstall it first, I will lose it all.

What does the source code look like with the header gone?
browser > view source

The source code says that the header is fine. This is what it shows for one of the pages:

<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="includes/header.htm" TAG="BODY" startspan -->
<b><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse" width="100%" id="table1">
<tr>
<td width="100%" BACKGROUND="includes/nv_bg.gif"><font size="6"><b>

<img border="0" src="includes/usa_animated_flag.gif" width="161" height="90"><b><font face="Georgia" size="5" color="#000080">
<img border="0" src="includes/mvnlogoweb120x110.gif" width="120" height="110"></font></b><p>
<b><font face="Georgia" size="5" color="#000080">The
Gateway to Success For Mortgage Professionals </font></b><marquee scrolldelay="50" style="font-family: serif; color: #000080; font-size: 24pt; font-style: oblique; font-weight: bold" behavior="slide" scrollamount="10" width="450">Mortgage Vendor Network</marquee></td>

OK, now this is getting totally strange.
I looked at the entire site again in my browser, and now it appears that all is good. The header is even showing up properly.
I didn't do anything, or change anything, so I am really confused.
What worries me, is that this is going to happen again.

What I would like to do now, is try to upload it to my site using Front Page, question is, do I need to delete all of the files I put on the site originally, or will these files just overwrite the ones on the site?

Hi Anita,

I think I may have suffered a similar problem between normal/preview views in FP when I was using a Webstyle 4 nav menu in one of my sites.

From reading your code it would seem to me as if the problem exists because you're using a FP web component (includes) and you're FTP'ing rather than publishing. Can your try publishing and see what the error messages are that you're getting?

Nicole

Apologies for not remembering what i did with my problem ages ago, but i think I just accepted that it wasn't going to show in FP but when published it was going to be okay.

Are you using any other software besides FP for your header? Webstyle? How were your nav buttons made or were they part of a template?

Nicole

I am using FrontPage for most everything except of course the php portion of the site.
The header was made using frontpage and the navigational buttons were also from the sites theme in front page.
I want to try to upload again using FrontPage instead of ftp, but I don't know if I should delete the old stuff first or not.

Sometimes it's best to create a new page and upload that to see if the problem exists. Call it something completely different from anything else so you'll know you can delete it later. I'm interested to know the error message you're getting though.

Nicole

So far so good. I took one file, and copied and renamed it, uploaded through frontpage and it works fine.
Do I dare risk it to try the whole thing?

Up to you, why not copy all your files to disk though just in case anything goes wrong.

I'm thinking the problem was that you're using a FP web component (includes) and you were FTP'ing instead of publishing.
