Can anyone help me? My "free webspace" won't ... - 7/14/2005 21:57:19
Forgive me if I'm one of many who have asked this question, but, does anyone know of a way I can still use a FrontPage 2000 website I created with a server that doesn't except FrontPage extensions?

I've already tried going to Page Options under tools and un-checking "enabled with ...FrontPage Server Extensions"

I have Verizon with free webspace and want to upload this website I created with neat avi's and stuff that I created and put on my FrontPage website but now I've found out it won't let me!!!!!

That was a lot of work and I don't want to pitch it now, I also hate to pay for another web provider because it's for this unicycle club my son is in.

Sure you can do this :)

Only certain components need FrontPage Extensions - there is a list here:

http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-96938/tm.htm

You will need to use an FTP Client to transfer your site to the Server, rather than using 'Publish' in FrontPage. Your host should have the settings for FTP listed somewhere.

If you have not got a FTP Client, there are some good free ones available, check out the list here to start with:
http://www.lisp.com.au/nonags/ftpc.html

I've been using FileZilla for a couple of years - works really well.

Edit: I did a search for Verizon and found this - they actually have a FTP Client limked and instructions.

Good luck with it!

A salutory lesson to all who use freebie web space. They only provide the absolute minimum facilities. If you try to do anything clever you are likely to find it won't work.

So very true! I have found it is much better to pay $10-$20/year for some poor hosting service, than deal with the troubles a free host causes.

Don't be surprised if you run out of space. They don't give you much and avi files take up a lot of space.

If you're likely to have a lot of visitors you may also find you run out of bandwidth pretty fast if they're looking at the vids. You'll know it's happened when you go online and find the site missing.

But don't pay their $5 per month... you can get great hosting for half that if you don't want bells or whistles :)
