UCONN90 -> email repeatedly received? (7/19/2005 11:04:48)

Hi all,

I have a client who sent an email from her Earthlink account to a friend. It had a PDF file attached which was large and seemed to exceed the recipients mailbox size and there was an error received by both the sender and recipient. FYI - PDF was scanned for viruses and is clean. Sending computer is also clean of viruses.

HOWEVER it has been about 5 days now and this same message is still being received by the recipient every 30 minutes, and an error message i still bouncing back to the sender.

We have deleted the sending Earthlink email account but the recipient say she is still receiving the message every 30 minutes.

Recipient's tech keeps pointing the finger at Earthlink saying it's stuck in their spooler. Earthlink say it's not their problem.

Has someone run into an email message being receiving repeatedly like this for days? Any thoughts on how to resolve? We're desperate!

Thanks!

Megan

Sure have. Most mail servers when experiencing a delivery issue will automatically resend the email at a specified (by the service) interval. For us here, at work, I have set it to once every four hours for four days. After that it dies on the wire.

Also when I get complaints like yours I go into our deferred que (Where messages like this reside on our system). Search for the message and delete, pretty straight forward.

When you said "and an error message i still bouncing back to the sender" could you post that message? I think it will hold the answer.

Take care,

Brian

Thanks, Brian for your response. Here is a copy of a bounced message from last week that the sender received when this all started. Perhaps you can make some sense of it? Let me know if you have more questions!!

You have two issues at play here.

1) <molly%balancefeedback.com>
(reason: User unknown)

is saying that the exact email address used is invalid. Wether it is or not I do not know. That is what their mail server thinks.

2) procmail: Quota exceeded while writing "molly%balancefeedback.com/

is stating that the attachment you are sending exceeds the allowed user limit on their email server.

Also I ripped out the @ in all addresses and replaced it with %. This way Molly won't get buckets of SPAM from email harvesters.

Take care,

Brian

UCONN90 -> RE: email repeatedly received? (7/19/2005 15:27:02)

Thanks, Brian.

Molly's email address is valid and she is receiving the message and the attachments, despite the error about the quota exceeded (she thinks her mailbox might have been full when this first all started).

That is the weird part - she keeps getting the message to come through to her computer again and again for 5 days now.

Where is this email coming from if the sender's account is now deleted?

So frustrating....

From the email sever that is programmed to retry. Once a failure occurs the email sever will normally be the new "sender" in essence. I have heard some email servers re-trying a send for up to 10 days. although 4 is the standard. It all depends on each company and how the configure there email server agents.

Take care,

Brian
