Did I break the extensions? - 7/19/2005 18:43:26
Hello, this is sort of related to my post about a locked mdb file here: http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-277426/tm.htm

Win2K Server, IIS 5

Have had a series of problems with the site since last Thursday. Getting SharePoint errors on 'recalculate hyperlinks' in FrontPage, then getting error's on all asp pages, then getting 403 errors on pages in an underscore directory (that I had set permissions on). Then could not open site with FP.

Worst of all was a horrifying hour or so when anyone could use 'Edit with FrontPage' in IE and get full access to the site. I pulled both DB's off the site via FTP when this happened. This web has worked perfectly well until we had the problem with the db locking up.

Have been emailing and phoning the host frequently for the past few days and really lost it yesterday when there was no site security.

All is back to normal now but the host told me this was all my fault as I use a combination of working live with FrontPage and FTP. Would this be the case?

I'm by no means an expert and have very little understanding of web servers, but have been working with websites for a few years. On the websites for work I've always used a combo of FTP and FP - these sit on a Win2K server with IIS 5, another is on Win 2003 with IIS 6, and another is on a 'Nix with Apache. These are edited nearly daily either with FP or FTP. I only use FTP on files that don't require FP extensions.

I asked our Systems Manager at work and he tells me I've not caused any problems at all on the servers here.

Has anyone else experience this? Should I either use FP or FTP exclusively? At the moment I'm not gain to go and look at this site with either... It's on a shared server - web pool (probably makes no difference to the problems though).

Am thinking we need a new host but can't be sure that I did not cause all these problems :)

Sally

Hi Sally,

Bit too advanced/involved for me but I also know that a lot of hosts often put the blame onto anyone but themselves. I'm also very unsure if this helps, but the host for my site gave me an Administration page where i can recalculate the web after i've done any changes to forms etc. which seems to rectify little problems.

There also used to be a site that you could check whether FPSE were installled the address i think was http://www.dnswiz.com/main.htm but it doesn't seem to work now.

I'm probably way off the mark with any of this but hope i've helped in some little way anyway.

Nicole

Nicole, thanks for replying :) I don't think you are way off the mark at all. I did check for extensions yesterday and it's shows that they are installed - but I suspect they are corrupted (not that I'd really know).

I spoke to soon about it being back to normal. I am unable to open or edit with FrontPage - keep getting a "File or Web Site does not exist" error :)

I even tried opening the site via the IP, rather than the domain, but when I try the IP in the browser I get a "The site you were trying to reach does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded." message.

Our Systems Manager here at work has been very kind - has assured me that it's not my problem but he is so busy (actually we all are), that I've not had time to pick his brain further.

FWIW, the last communication I had from the host told me to uninstall and then reinstall FrontPage - what a lot of rubbish!! I have FP going every day on the intranets and there are no issues with them at all, and as a test I threw a FP site out on my Personal Webspace (not in use) and that worked fine.

Also tried connecting to the site on a new machine with a new install and that failed (could connect to the intranets fine with this).

Opps, sorry for ranting :) This is just so frustrating, it's only a club site but it means a lot to the members.

I just wish I knew more about things like this, only know enough to know that there is something wrong.

Sally

I'm running into a similar problem, but from the dreaded Host side of the arguement (GASP!)

My client is experiencing very similar problems, and I'm digging around trying to find out why.

He's getting the same "The Folder http://IPA.ddr.ess.xxx/subweb is no longer available" error. I was originally unable to reproduce the problem, then could. My short-term solution was to clear temp and *.web files on the client. WOrked for a bit, but now we're back in the same spot, and several sites on that server are now hanging for me.

At this point, I have ruled out client configuration, site configuration, VPN config, FW Config, and I think the last thing I have left is to repair FPSE (from the setup.exe), but that's going to require a server restart, which the client isn't really happy about.

Is there any other place to check first? Check Server Health shows up clean, and Recalcualting the web fills the event logs with:

quote:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: FrontPage 5.0
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 7/25/2005
Time: 2:26:34 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HOstname
Description:
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - Error #a0007 Message: Error from search: can't open the word hash file C:\Inetpub\xxx\_vti_txt\default.wti\All.dct unable to open the database

Which I've quickly fixed in the past by:

quote:

open the web page that contains the Search Form. Right click, and choose Search Form Properties. Change one of the properties. Save the file. Then Change the property back, and close the file. You will be prompted to save it; click OK. This seemingly meaningless sequence of steps will remind FrontPage you have a Search Form, and cause it to create the word list. Then click Tools, Recalculate Hyperlinks. This will repopulate the All.dct file.

In your case, this process should CREATE the All.DCT file. For some reason, there isn't one on the server.

I've read that apparently this is a bug within the FrontPage Search Bot, and happens periodically when you have multiple authors and permissions.

If someone else can point me in the right direction, I'll promise to do my best and get Hosting services a better name!!
