PageRank question - 7/25/2005 8:14:40
Okay, I know the debate on the real and perceived benefits of Google Toolbar PageRank is a big one, from what I've read on this and other forums... Some people say it's very important and has an effect, others say to pay no attention to it because it's a novelty, and everything in between. Regardless of this, however, for someone whose site has never had PageRank, imagine my delight on waking up one morning a couple of weeks ago (around the time I read Google had updated PageRank) to find the homepage of my site had a PR of 4 (previously 0) and other pages had PRs of 3, 2, and 1. Whether important or only a novelty, it still got me pretty happy! So then imagine my deflation on waking up yesterday to find that all my PR had disappeared on every page. So, a couple of questions... 1 Does anyone know why this may have happened? I thought that Google updated PR once every couple of months, not once a week. 2 I submitted an XML Google Sitemap a couple of days after PR appeared - could this have had any effect? (I read in the Sitemaps FAQ that you are never penalised in terms of rank when submitting a Sitemap) The PR4 didn't actually make any difference in my SERP rank (and neither did I expect it to) - still not even close there! but it did make a difference in that I saw quite an increase in other sites emailing me asking to exchange links. So my questions are partly from curiosity, partly from frustration. The site is here Thanks to anyone for any comments on this. A subdued kt

Jaybee - what do you mean by the Firefox algorithm? The google toolbar on my Firefox browser shows a PR of 0 - are you talking about something else? Thanks, kt

PR 4 for me on the Firefox Google Pagerank extension (you add this extension to Firefox KT and it will show you the PR of whatever page you're on.)

ORIGINAL: Donkey I'm using the google pagerank status extension v 0.9.3, the page rank appears in the status bar at the bottom right of the browser. Mine says zero. Are you using a different extension? Same one.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I checked using the Firefox extension and got PR4 the first time I loaded the page. After that I got 0. IE still shows 0. With this in mind and the fact that some of you got 4, others 0, I guess my next question is why the discrepancies?! Donkey - you mentioned this could be to do with cache somewhere - how could I check this? thanks, kt

Brian - that's when I got my initial PR of 4 (had previously been 0). Then about a week later it seemed to disappear again, hence this post! kt

During updates to the SERPs or PR you will see fluctuations. This is the first sign of an update in progress. You can get really nitty gritty and track the different data centers. I have never gotten down to this level as I have never wanted to. Take care, Brian

Here is some information about your site - from Google: google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&ch=6-1903182436&q=www.eslbase.com results: quote:
<Q>www.eslbase.com</Q> <PARAM name="client" value="navclient-auto" original_value="navclient-auto"/> <PARAM name="ch" value="6-1903182436" original_value="6-1903182436"/> <PARAM name="q" value="www.eslbase.com" original_value="www.eslbase.com"/> <ISURL/> - <RES SN="1" EN="10"> <M>236</M> <FI/> - <NB> - <NU> /search?q=www.eslbase.com&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&output=xml&client=navclient-auto&start=10&sa=N </NU> </NB> - <R N="1"> <U>http://www.eslbase.com/</U> <UE>http://www.eslbase.com/</UE> - <T> TEFL ESL jobs, courses, resources, activities, Teaching English as <b>...</b> </T> <RK>4</RK> <CRAWLDATE> Jul 24, 2005</CRAWLDATE> - <S> TEFL and ESL jobs, courses and resources. Find old TEFL friends. </S> <RK>4</RK> is the Pagerank. You still have a PR4. EDIT: I am breaking the link as the checksum will change in the future so the link won't work anyhow.

How did you generate that? Google did it, not me. All you need is the checksum value of the URL and you can plug it in. EDIT: You can find various checksum calculators on the net or use a packet sniffer to pull out the checksum.
