Remove icon from Microsoft Windows Network - 7/25/2005 16:42:25
Hi all,

My boss's son came in the office today, and started fooling around on one of the machines and added a network. (see pic)
I can't figure out how he did it, so I can't figure out how to remove it.
Does anybody know?

Carrie

The short answer is to tell your boss to get his little **** of a son to come back and remove it..... OR ELSE!

Your security may be compromised and you have no idea what he's set up the network to do.

I would also suggest that you get a techie in to remove admin rights from all and sundry if you don't know what you're doing.

At the minimum - right click on it and choose disable.
But yes - you need to ensure nothing else has been compromised for any reason

Just to give you an idea about what someone can do when they have access to your network, basically, with a single username, they can get everyone's user ID/pw, as well as the main administrator.

Spooky,

Thanks for the reply. I tried to right-click and delete, not an option. There is also not an option for disable.
It looks to me like it's an actual network, like our office network 'Coast'. Obviously we want to keep the Coast, but how can I remove the 'Rob net'.

Bobby:

Every user that has access has a username & pwd. How can I protect from them as well?

Jaybee:

Unfortunately, some of the programs we use insist on administrator rights to run, not just install. If there is a way around that please let me know.

Thanks,
Carrie

- Dunno really. Right now I am researching security flaws (as of the past month or so), while doing that, I read a lot about how to fix these flaws. For some reason Win2k passwords can be cracked using "John the Ripper" I believe. I forget what program finds the usernames, I think it is a flaw with the search, that displays the computer names, which then shows the usernames for that computer.

Your best bet, is to have permissions for whatever you need to do, and nothing else. It takes a good 10 minutes to get inside a windows box.
