RickP -> No animated gifs working - Win XP (7/26/2005 16:58:47)

Er, I've been tinkering a little bit with a few system settings in win xp (+sp2) and now animated gifs don't animate any more [:)] !?

I've never kown this before... On this forum, if I use explorer, the animated avatars just don't do it any more; if I use FF the avatars don't appear at all (!)

I deleted a lot of temp files but I also disabled a few odds and ends under Control panel > Admin Tools > Services (to help things run smoother [8|]) but I did keep some notes (partial ones of course!). The trouble is... I have also just downloaded and installed the latest Zone Alarm Pro Trial + EZantivirus and numerous spyware removers (feeling a little paranoid lately!).

Now, with so much all done at once I can't be 100% sure which is the cause of the problem and thought I might just ask here first if anyone has an inspirational guess (or better) before I going backtracking through the lot.

Any ideas? Heard of this before?

Thanks if you can help [:)]

I think ZA will be the culpruit from memory - just try it quickly with it off

Nope! but thanks for reply - it now seems from further investigation that 'some' animations work still - most on this site now (in IE - none appear in FF) - except my own animated avatar (!)

I've been to sites where I know there is animation and in one instance for example it is not working in I.E but it is working in FF.

Tried with the anti-V off too and same results.

Checked all animated gifs on my hard drive and they seem to work.

So... it seems to lay somewhere in the realm of browsers (I think!)

Hmm... if I open my animated gif (that isn't working here) from my hard-drive with IE - it works!

Methinks then... er... I still don't know!!!!!!! maybe it is to do with Internet security somewhere????

Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/"play animations in web sites"

Thanks Dan, had checked this already but have just found the problem now...

Spooky was right after all, it was my new trial version of Zone Alarm PRO. However, simply disabling it didn't make any difference for some reason (!?) but there is a setting which by default blocks most 'ads' - including anything animated (it obviously doesn't work consistently anyhow) but for future searchers with this problem here's what to do...

Open Zone Alarm
Go to 'PRIVACY' TAB > AD BLOCKING>CUSTOM
You'll see the relevant box to uncheck there.

Well, that's another mystery solved and yet another example of 'security' causing as many problems as it cures!

Thanks Dan & Spooky

If you want a good, cheap, firewall with a superb antivirus then go check out BitDefender. Been using if for ages and had no problems.

Okay, thanks Jaybee, maybe timely advice as I have been making a few changes and experiments in this area this week. The worrying thing is that after scanning with several different spyware tools they each came up with items missed by the others and if this is the case with spyware I'm starting to wonder if any single AV solution is enough!?

Have tried all the above steps and still cannot get GIF's to animate in IE or Firefox...but some animate in Opera.

unpocoloco -> RE: No animated gifs working - Win XP (11/10/2005 0:33:16)

RickP - Thanks!! I have been trying to figure out what the heck made the animated gifs stop working for a long time now. I thought it was the most recent install of the java JRE. Stupid ZoneAlarm - I've had some serious issues with it in the past. One time it caused my computer to get stuck in an endless reboot cycle. Grrr...

PadFoot - try going to the Options, and clear all the cookies, clear the history, most importantly clear the cache - and close and restart your browser. That did the trick for me when FireFox was slow to realize that animations were now okay.
