I have published a form created by FP2003 with the results to be sent to me by email. When online I click on the submit button, I am getting the message:-

Front Page Error.

User: please report details to this site's webmaster

Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.


I have checked with the host who are quite unhelpful and responded as follows:-

I have checked the configuration of the form and it appears to be correct.

Your host most likely didn't even check if there was a problem lol.

- Ask them to check your logs for errors. Usually FP will store an error inside your error log area. Make them work! If they just want to throw you around, at least take up some of their time. [:'(]

Hi Ken,

Welcome to OutFront

The FrontPage error can appear as a result of extension trouble or form properties settings. A URL for the problem page might help.

I get this error as well. I cannot figure it out. As an example, you can view this simple form:

Micheal has probably identified the problem which is associated with FrontPage Extensions or lack thereof. Extensions are required to run any FP component including Reply Forms.

This is your server query response:

www.swgc.mun.ca/
Port: 80
Server Software: This Web Server Does Not Disclose Identity
FrontPage Extensions: NO

Additionally, the "Form" at http://www.swgc.mun.ca/swgc-res/new_page_1.htm doesn't appear to be completely built out - I believe at least one visitor response field in addition to the Submit button is required.

Again on target, Bobby has identified a typical host "non-response". If they don't or won't support FrontPage Extensions, it's time for a hosting change.

Very odd... I do have Server Extensions installed... odd odd... it could be a problem when the HDD died and we backed it up....

ok... what if I uninstall FPSE and then reinstall.... will i have to recreate all the subwebs again? or what can I do?there are like 50 - 60 subwebs. Any suggestions.

Hi Rage,

Well, from looking at the HTML, it appears the extensions are present.

You are using new_page_1.txt as your file destination. So a blank text file/Notepad named new_page_1 would need to be saved to the _private folder.

Additionally, your form resides in a sub web and some hosts don't offer extension support for sub webs.

I would first verify the file exists in _private or create it. Then republish, making sure to use the built in "Publish Web" function to http location.

Let us know whether or not this makes a diff.

The file is present. I am hosting the webserver, so I know the file exsists and I do offer extension support for subs webs. I republished the web without success...

I also Uninstalled FrontPage Extensions for that particular web. and recreated the subwebs. This did not work. I stil lget the error. The odd thing is, it is writing to the new_page_1.txt. Any entry I submit shows up in the txt file... But I get this:

FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.

There is nothing in the logs that I can see. Any ideas why this would post to the file but give that error?

Honestly don't really know why it writes to file and still produces an error. I have seen others with the same problem, but no definite answer has ever appeared to me.

I guess as a temporary measure, you might add the form to the root web opening in a new window as a way around this. If that produces the error, then it may be something to do with the way the extensions are configured on the server (out of my league).

I have seen many people with this problem, and no one gets an answer.

Well my plan was to in the future rewrite all the forms with an ASP script. I was hoping to be able to postpone this unilt October, but looks like I can't. I have redone 3 out of 10 forms so far to use an asp script instead of using the extentions.

Sorry I couldn't come up with a solution. Maybe someone else has a fix for this.

Hi rage2001, I had this problem a week or so ago - finally worked out that it was the email (SMTP configuration).

If you remove the email from your form and just send the results to file, does the error still appear?

In my case the SMTP needed to be configured in the Extensions. I don't have access to this, but my host fixed it straight away and the forms all started working.

A search at Google for 'frontpage extensions smtp configuration' brings up quite a few sites with info. There are a few threads here as well, it was a post by Shirley that pointed me in the right direction ... unfortunatly I did not keep the URL and can't quite remember what I searched for (basically did searches on everything to do with forms).

Hope you get it sorted - these things are very frustrating.

Thanks for the info Sally... but unfortunately this also happens wwhen I just try to write to a file...

So I decided to rewrite the pages in ASP to work. I am on the last form, so its not a big deal...

I would still ike ot know why it was happening though... Probably will never find out.
