Problems with Windows XP shut down - 7/28/2005 15:07:19
I have a bit of a problem. I've tried the M$ knowledge base, wandered around on the web etc. and I can't find any similar problems, and I'm at all bit of a loss as to what to do (except to lock the door on my office - you'll see why below).

I'm running Windows XP pro, with SP2, up to date virus protection etc. and I do regular scans, and most of the time things are working okay aside from the fact I need a memory upgrade.

My problem is that whenever I'm logged in and then go away and do something else for a while, and meanwhile my PC goes back to the login page, if someone else in the family decides to come along, log on and do something on it while I'm away (logging out when they've finished and it goes back to the login page again), when I come back and try and log in again, it either hangs, or I just get a blank screen. Ctrl+Alt+delete doesn't work, neither does the power button, or sticking a pin in the reset hole. The only way I can get things running again is to unplug the power, then plug back in.

That usually gets things running again but then I have to hope it recovers whatever I was working on if I forgot to save whatever I was doing before I wandered off. Apart from banning the family from going anywhere near it, has anyone any suggestions as to what this might be and what I can do about it?

Have you been up and running for over a year? If so.. about once a year I do a complete re-install of everything. So far I have been up for 1.5 years with no problems, but this time I am using a 10k rpm hard drive, which I think makes a huge difference.
