Sean Brady -> Frontpage 2003 + FTP (8/1/2005 19:15:03)

I have recently moved web hosting companies (I signed with Easyspace), but the package I selected (Gold) allows me to only upload my site using FTP. I'm not sure which FTP program to use, but I have downloaded a 30-day trial version of CuteFTP 7 to see if it's for me. With regard to CuteFTP, you are presented with two windows - the local site is in the left window & the remote site appears in the right window. My question is: do you have to drag each file (page, graphic, image) one at a time or can you select all & drag everything at once? Any help with regard to FTP would be very much appreciated. My website location is www.gene-watson.com where an Easyspace holding page can presently be viewed.

Hi Sean, it's a while since I've used Cute FTP, but from memory you could select the files, click on Transfer in the top toolbar, and then add them to your Queue. Right clicking on the files probably also lets you add to the Queue. As soon as you have all the files you want in the Queue, select Transfer in the top toolbar and then 'Transfer Queue'. I think you could also just select files and then use the upload arrow.

Have never actually used drag and drop, but am clumsy so would probably end up with files in all the wrong places [&:]

There are some very good free FTP Clients around as well. NoNags has a good list - look in the SoftWare menu, then Internet, then FTP Clients.

I've been using FileZilla for a couple of years and am very happy with it.

You can ftp from FrontPage as well. You don't have to "publish"

Just bear in mind that if you use ftp it can mess up the FP extensions on the server and any FP elements you use that rely on FP extensions may not work.

Thank you, one & all, for all your valuable contributions - very much appreciated! I downloaded an evaluation copy of WS_FTP & it appears to be the program that I may go with for uploading my site. I say 'may', because I have just opened up Frontpage 2003 tonight & it displayed my local site in the left hand window & the remote site in the right hand window, something that it wasn't doing for me previously. So things a re looking promising.

I realise that using FTP with Frontpage causes harm to the Frontpage Server Extensions, but I thought that this was not an issue if I do not use any of the Frontpage components that require these so-called extensions. I don't even use the shared borders within Frontpage 2003.

Thanks again!

I recently downloaded an evaluation copy of WS_FTP & it is now the program that I'm now using to upload my site. I finally sorted out my problem with regard to previous attempts to upload my pages. It appears that the Windows XP Firewall was blocking WS_FTP.

I simply turned off the Firewall & was then able to upload. I then switched the Firewall back on once I had finished. Norton Anti Virus 2005 was looking after my firewall protection while the Windows one was turned off. I have uploaded two pages of my web site so far, the home page of which can now be viewed at www.gene-watson.com So things are looking very promising indeed.

The only long term problems I have ever seen with clients that use FTP with Front Page, is that every once in a while you need to uninstall and reinstall the extensions.

Like someone said above, if you start using any FP components, they will get corrupted much faster.
