Changing from htm will it make a difference - 8/2/2005 0:27:03
If I change a sites index page from htm to asp or aspx will that have any effect on my current rankings? On search terms where the site is number one the link is to www.mydomain.com not www.mydomain.com/index.htm. I am getting ready to convert a site and suddenly got scared I would disapear out of the seach engines when when I change over.

If your back links and internal links point to the web root (www.example.com) you should be fine. Check out your internal links before making the change. Sometimes, people will reference index.htm or index.asp instead of pointing to the root. That can make a big difference.

We did a similar thing with Outfront recently and noticed no change in rankings

While it's not always an ideal solution;
sometimes the only reason to change file extensions is because you need to run some server side code (PHP, ASP, ect.).
Most people don't realize it but you can run ANY code you want on a page with ANY file extension (as long as you let the server know about it).

I have a document here:
MIME TYPE SWITCH
that explains how to do it.
the main reason I'm recommending it and or showing how to do it in this document is to keep frontpage happy but another good reason to do it is if you're working with a large site and don't want to mess up what the search engines have indexed and you don't want to generate a bunch of "page not found" errors, or update all the internal references and navigation.
