Help finding US laws for businesses - 8/3/2005 16:41:07
I am unable to find any information about what is required for small web design businesses and their clients regarding accessibility.

Please post or link to areas that explain the law and who is required to follow that law. It seems like S508 is only for federal agencies, so we are not required to follow this, but what are we required to follow?

Try doing what I'm doing and contact the US DOJ for clarification. Maybe between us we'll get something sensible.

And once we find it,we're going to pay a lawyer $200+/hr to tell us what it actually means. Damn you US!!

I'll contact the AZ area from WebAim, they might be able to get the information a little easier than me.

I've also emailed people who look after ADA and asked them what their requirements are from one-man-band web designers.

It'll be interesting to see how forthcoming the responses will be if at all. As mentioned in this thread i've had very little success being supplied information by Australian Government Agencies reggarding similar issues and Privacy issues. If only i'd have thought to enquire through HREOC (Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission), or similar Human Rights & Disability organisations.

I'd also be interested to find out whether having your client sign an agreement or give you express written permission that they don't require their site to be made more accessible, whether that really protects us as designers in a court of law.

I think that sums it up - statutorily, in the US, there are no legal reqirements except for government agencies and vendors of the US government.

...aaah we just like to chat about this kind of stuff sometimes y'now. It's not 100% necessary but some people like to put it into practice....

Kind of reminds me of SEO, it's not 100% necessary but some people like to chat about that too....

Seems to me as if we've come from different ends of the web design spectrum Mojo, you from the business end, me from the compliance end. Some day, who knows, we just may meet.

I would really like to keep this thread on topic. I don't want to miss this much needed information that is still not posted here at outfront.
