Should I register more domain names? - 8/5/2005 23:44:08
Help

I was just recently told I could get higher rankings on Google if I register more domain names. My website is the same as my name curtparker. [we have a jewelry store] The SEO who gave the lecture said I should register names such as curtparker diamonds, curtparker jewleery and so on. Will this help my rankings or just cost me a bunch of money?

Thanks

Curt

Registering the domains won't help your rankings, however, if you put great content on each of those domains, and link over to your main site, it will help rankings. Just be careful so that Google and such do not see those sites as bad backlinks, because of their affiliation with your main site.

Take a moment though and look at penalties. You must do this right or you will get nuked out of the SEs. When going down this road procure different web hosts for each TLD/domain.

Why?

Say you use the same host for all domains. Each domain will be located on the hosts servers at their data center. Now most hosts only get an IP range located in what is called the same class c block. Now when you heavily interlink the sites they all will be pointing to that same class c block in the IP range. Google will figure this out and penalize. Nuked out of SERPs.

I went through this twice before I figured it out.

What I would do is move forward with your plans BUT house each domain at a different host. This way the IPs are not all from the same block and you will not get penalized.

Take care,

Brian
