How Do I Convert Raster to Vector? - 8/6/2005 8:59:17
Hi Everyone,

Logo Creator does a good job of creating web-friendly logos but the program outputs in bitmap/raster images only which are, of course, unacceptable for print/promotional media.

I have been outsourcing the raster to vector step but would like to be able to do this on my own. I have PaintShop Pro, versions 8 and 9 and PhotoShop 7. The help screens, however, deal with images actually created in these programs, not those imported. Logo Creator will output in png, jpeg, bmp, pdf and gif in resolutions from 72 to 1200 dpi.

Any help with complete work steps included would be most appreciated :)

looks like you may be stuck with recreating it using the pen tool in Photoshop/PSP as vector. Macromedia freehand can trace bitmaps (not much use if you don't have it!) and once traced converting the colours to cmyk would need to be done (either in Freehand or illustrator, or import the paths into photoshop and colour them in there)

hmm tricky one really when working for print with (mostly) web tools (excepting PS). i usually use Fireworks (excellent vector support and integrates with Freehand peachily). in your scenario i would go with drawing the shapes of the logo in PS and colour each shape separately in CMYk and re-set the text in there. you may need to check with the printer what formats they will accept: e.g. native PS format (have they/you got compatible versions), illustrator format (.ai) you can export the PS doc as illustrator format (export paths to illustrator...)

you might have to see about doing the rest of your logos in PS/PSP in the future ;)

if you need any more help with converting or tracing then post an example here (as raster/vector) and we can lend a hand.

psp also can create stuff in vector format but never used it much... make sure you can work in CYMK colour space before embarking on any tracing with the pen tool!

I am not as well versed as Dave with graphics, so don't know whether this will help any, but for what it's worth I had a similar situation recently where I was putting together an ad for a local mag in Pagemaker. It was just black and white though, the logo I wanted to include had to be converted from psp9 native files into tiff format before going into Pagemaker. ( The original logo had started off as a .jpg file.) Then the whole ad was distilled to pdf for the print shop.

That logo looks a lot better as a tiff :)

that's a good point actually! -
you can always check if the printers will take a hi res tiff: 1200 ppi should be enough for even glossies (e.g. magazines) and probably something like 300-600 ppi would be around the mark, the printers can tell you.

if it is more than one colour you will have to see if you can change it in Logo Creator or then export the tiff and convert it from RGB to CMYK in photoshop, bearing in mind that you will/may get some colour changes (it's going to look a bit different when it's printed as i'm sure you're aware that the colours that can be represented in print aren't necessarily exactly the same as those that can be on screen.

of course it is always handier in vector format as it's so easy to update and resize without loss of quality.

Dave,

Wow! Lots more to this than I thought which was just a few "speedo - chango" key strokes.

Sounds like, for the half dozen or so logos I do every year or so, that the best thing for me is to continue outsourcing. VikingArts - http://www.vikingarts.com/ - has been doing this for $10 - $39 per logo depending on the complexity. Really no problem, dollar-wise. I'll just continue to pass it through.

Thanks so much for the comprehensive reply :)

Dave,

I'll try this.

Caz, appreciate your input as well.
