signing a petition on line - 8/8/2005 0:17:43
Is there a way to do an on line petition? The goal is to get singatures and have a body that can be presented to local/ county/ State officals.

I get some from time to time that you have to sign and send on. They always seem to get lost and someone does not send it on.

all the best

HMM. That is a reasonable idea, but it has a lot of holes. Anyone could sign a guestbook over and over without true or correct information. There is really no validation or essence that the petition would be accurate.

How do you propose the information will be true and correct?
Have you checked that they will accept a list of unsigned names??

In the US, specifically Ohio, when we did a petition drive we had to turn in the original signatures to the court house.

Take care,

Brian

Is it really worth the effort? I am pretty sure that most petitions aren't worth the (virtual or real) paper they are written on. Can anyone tell me of any petitions that have changed anything? I think the only petition worth a damn is the ballot box. All the others are politely accepted then ignored because the people in power don't care who disagrees with them because they think they know best.

only exception to that i knowof is that in many us states, you can petition to have an issue placed on the ballot - and they are very very fussy about format. if you get enough sigs (and every one is a registered voter, your issue goes on the ballot. internet sigs wont work.

HMM.. It depends what is if for doesn't it. State senators who are still accesible like new ideas and like to see that there is some backing to it.

Oddly a petition, if written well, can also get people who would think themselves on opposite sides of the fence to realize that there is something in common. I suppose it depends what the topic is. So it can be used as a mobilizing tool.

I can see we are getting way off the technical topic and into editorial. getting back.

I did find a few free petitions like ipetitions.com but they are quite flawed in the Opt In or verification process and want to advertise stuff on the petition pages. That won't work really.

Spooky.. Do I hear you off coding a new product? LOL

No ;-)

The thing with an online petition is that I could enter my preference many times - I should be able to enter only once.

Check the options you listed above as your democracy may be different to ours :)
