You can't. If my browser is to parse the HTML, the HTML HAS to be already downloaded to my machine.------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Daddy, why doesn't this magnet pick up this floppy disk?"

Actually you can. But, you'll need to cloak those pages and its a technology that requires quite a bit of research and the proper tools in place.

I would like to know how to cloak the pages myself. I know you can use MS encoding, but that takes almost nothing to crack.Seriously, I am curious, Joe

Perhaps my naivete is showing, but what could possibly be so important on a website, in the html, that needs to be secreted away?

As I read the document I noticed this companies brag: "Use your browser's menu to "view source" and check out this unbeatable encryption for yourself!""unbeatable encryption" seems a little strong. Here is the source code that is "unbeatable". People need to understand they can't rely on these sort of techniques to protect sensitive data or code. Although, I would love to have one that worked. code:
<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="88%" align="center"> <tr> <td width="8" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="33" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="417" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="14" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="21" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="223" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="153" height="22" valign="top"></td> <td width="16" height="22" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="81" valign="top"></td> <td width="33" height="81" valign="top"></td> <td height="81" colspan="5" valign="top"> <p align="center"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>This page has been encrypted with WebCrypt Pro by Moonlight Software<br> </b></font><a href="http://www.moonlight-software.com"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="1">http://www.moonlight-software.com</font></a> </p> </td> <td width="16" height="81" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="17" valign="top"></td> <td height="312" colspan="3" rowspan="3" valign="top"><img src="images/wc-flora01.jpg" width="377" height="272"></td> <td width="21" height="17" valign="top"></td> <td width="223" height="17" valign="top"></td> <td width="153" height="17" valign="top"></td> <td width="16" height="17" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="261" valign="top"></td> <td width="21" height="261" valign="top"></td> <td height="261" colspan="3" valign="top"> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>WebCrypt Pro features used on this page:</b></font></p> <ul> <li><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Right-click save image disabled</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">HTML fully encrypted</font> - <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Use your browser's menu to "view source" and check out this unbeatable encryption for yourself!</font><br> </li> </ul> <p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="34" valign="top"></td> <td width="21" height="34" valign="top"></td> <td height="227" colspan="2" rowspan="2" valign="top"><img src="images/wc-flora02.jpg" width="299" height="213"></td> <td width="16" height="34" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="193" valign="top"></td> <td width="33" height="193" valign="top"></td> <td width="417" height="193" valign="top"> <p> </p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Then,</font><font face="Times New Roman" size="2"> t</font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">ake advantage of our Free 7-day trial which you can download here:</font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><a href="http://www.moonlight-software.com/webcrypt.htm">Back to WebCrypt Pro page</a></font></p> </td> <td width="14" height="193" valign="top"></td> <td width="21" height="193" valign="top"></td> <td width="16" height="193" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="8" height="2" valign="top"><img width="7" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="33" height="2" valign="top"><img width="27" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="417" height="2" valign="top"><img width="338" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="14" height="2" valign="top"><img width="12" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="21" height="2" valign="top"><img width="17" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="223" height="2" valign="top"><img width="181" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="153" height="2" valign="top"><img width="124" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> <td width="16" height="2" valign="top"><img width="16" height="1" src="transparent.gif"></td> </tr> </table>

RE: Hiding HTML code - 7/11/2001 20:19:00
Bill -In regards to WHY hide the code... suppose you (or a corporation) put many months into coding something and had someone come in, copy the coding, and instantly have a duplicate for themselves? Most people and companies would never do something like that, but sadly, some have no problems with it. They may realize it's illegal, but figure the chances of being prosecuted are slim. Check www.pirated-sites.com . One that was pointed out had a completely new site up within hours... sure makes you wonder who he took his latest site from. For myself, no, I'm not into hiding code... but I can understand where the interest in it comes from. ...and then the fun begins. For anyone trying to hide code, it makes it such a lovely temptation to get to it. I would think that it's often safer to leave out in the open. Linda

Hi Linda,Thank you for the reply. I do truly understand that perspective. Piracy is, sadly, a risk one takes when putting out a website. For me, the reality is that hiding this code is completely irrational given international access, and different or no laws. I was watching with much interest, the "race" to crack the cloaking schemes in this thread... smiling all the way as this totally validates your statement about the temptation to break the code. It's a lot like mountain climbing ... "because it's there... Just something that has to be done. Anyway, I posted this question in the Lounge Forum to try to get some answers directly to this question and not distract attention from the ongoing thread here. So far, there has been no real reason to justify hiding the code... and more importantly, no apparent way to securely do it.

Brian,I *wish* I did it Gil's way. I feel a little silly now. I wrote a JavaScript that just undid what the JS in the page was doing. That was how I got the code, which has the image locations within it. But, I did not grab the images that way. I simply looked at my browser cache, found the images and looked at their source. Pure vanilla. Joe

Bill,I am working on a project where it must have taken me over 150 hours to get a page to do what it is supposed to do. Add on top of that the hours of research and coding to even point me in the proper direction to *begin* looking for a solution and the hours easily go over 250. The people I am working for are a little shocked that anyone can simply snag the code and become instant competitors. If I had a way to hide the code, I would use it. Joe

Thomas,Unfortunately, the majority of the important code is for client side... JavaScript. I think the people I work for are not worried about individuals grabbing the code. They are concerned about large competitors who either never thought about adding this particular service or don't know how to implement it and could save both money and time by just scrapping our code. RE: Hiding HTML code - 7/11/2001 13:50:00
Hi Joe,Thank you for helping to clarify your point to me. I now understand the need, from a business perspective. Unfortunately, risks of all types are inherent in all businesses. Knockoffs are a daily occurrence in virtually every industry. Same goes for the web. I'm not saying that piracy is right, but we all have to be cognizant that the risk is always there....as are competitors. But so are potential partners. I guess I would just hate to see websites become so protected that interaction and dynamics are compromised. If website codes were routinely hidden and protected, there would be no need for Outfront or any other forum. We'd no longer have the ability to visit anyone else to check out their code or their ideas. Or to assist them either. Besides, I agree with Gil's comment earlier in this thread...I don't think it can be done, especially with current technology. I do thank you for a valid and intelligent viewpoint. Kindest regards, BN

You can't hide the code. Otherwise you'd hide the whole page. Sorry, your out of luck on that one! I suppose you could do all in macromedia.

WOW! The response here is amazing! After all of this, I think I may have posed the question wrong though. I guess I don't really want to "hide" the HTML code, but I want to prevent users from seeing the actual URL. I have a page that user's can only get to and post information on after they pay their money. I use Clickbank to do the credit card processing and then they send the user to the link to post the information. The problem with that is that the URL they forward the user to shows up in the address bar as the actual address, so they can just copy and paste it in next time and go straight to the page and I won't get paid. Also, if there was redirect code, then they could just view the source and see where the page was redirected to, and I'm back to the same issue of being able to bypass the payment page. Thanks again for your help!
