lu lu -> winows server 2003 (8/8/2005 12:48:47)

i'm hoping someone here can assist me, i'm working on a 2003 server and i'm lockout out. The physical server is right in from of me, and i went to log into the box using admin and it says i'm locked out. I know it locks out after 3 invalid tries for 16.5 hours. Really i don't want to wait that long before i can try to log in again, Is there a boot disk that will let me in?

Thanks

Are you sure it locks you out for that long?

IIRC the default Administrator account doesn't do that for reasons such as yours. I think it's just the user accounts that do that.

Other than that, if it is NTFS (and probably is if its 2K3) then you need the password to access the drive regardless.

yes i set it up like that [&:]

rdouglass -> RE: winows server 2003 (8/8/2005 15:05:01)

Well then. [:'(]

What I'd do is to do a re-install of the OS and change the password then. If it hasn't (the OS that is) gone thru too many service packs, it should retain everything (data, settings, etc.) and prompt you for a Admin password again.

Once you get it back, change the settings. [;)] I set my servers to allow access again in 15 minutes. That is long enough to usually discourage any hackers that try and fail because of lockouts IMO anyways. Persistent ones, maybe not, but most of them anyways.

Then if this happens again, you only have to wait 15 minutes. [:)]

have you tried something like this b4?

Never have. Have you? Will you let me know if it blows up your server? [;)]

Just kidding but I would be interested in your experiences if you use it.

didn't work for 2003, i tried every option even resetting all passwords in SAM - maybe it works if forgot password only on 2003 standard edition, not if locked out?

well i got into the server this morning, strangest thing, i was able to get into the disabled guest account thru safe mode, regular mode told me the account is disabled, but it let me in in safe mode

Giomanach -> RE: winows server 2003 (8/9/2005 13:42:02)

Never tried this in Safe mode...let alone on the guest account, but you may want to try the following, when you get in to the machine:

1) Start
2) Run
3) Enter control userpasswords2
4) Click OK
5) If it shows up, and you can edit things...should allow you to create a new Admin account to login to the server, and change password for the other Admin account

Not sure if it will work, but give it a shot

lu lu -> RE: winows server 2003 (8/9/2005 19:06:57)

i tested on another server, to see, and YES if your Guest account is disabled - which it should be, when you start up in just 'safe mode' you CAN login into the box using the safe mode account - that's if you remember the password. -- this must be a backdoor or something cause i couldn't find any references to it on the net/M$ kb

caz -> RE: winows server 2003 (8/9/2005 19:12:58)

The MS KB is a bit of a forest where you can't see the wood for the trees [;)] But Gio lives and breathes servers, so he does know them very well.

I know you can log into the safe mode admin account, but not the main admin account. Log into that account, and use the process as given above, that should allow you to reset the password :)
