Pop Up Ads That Won't Stop...Help! - 8/9/2005 18:22:12
I have pop up blocker turned on in windows xp. I also have run Adware and Spyware but can't seem to get rid of these crazy pop ups that just keep appearing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as these are so annoying.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

I associate this with an XP weakness: Messenger :).

Here's how to get rid of these very annoying popups (which, if not stopped, will eventually kill productivity altogether):

Right click Start menu, click Explore, right click Desktop, then select "Manage" from the drop down menu. In the window that opens, click on "Services and Applications" then on "Services".

In the window listing the services find "Messenger" and right click on it. (You will see that it is "started" and "automatic.") In the dropdown choose "Properties" then change startup type to "Disabled" and stop the service as well. Restart.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Larry!

Thanks for the reply. However when I right click on "desktop" I don't get "manage" in the drop down. I get "open, explore, properties, collaspe, scan with norton" Any ideas?

By the way, why does messenger allow this to happen? Can I continue to use messenger even though I'm following your instructions?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Sorry. It's:

Right click Start menu, click Explore, right click My Computer, then select "Manage" from the drop down menu. In the window that opens, click on "Services and Applications" then on "Services".

In the window listing the services find "Messenger" and right click on it. (You will see that it is "started" and "automatic.") In the dropdown choose "Properties" then change startup type to "Disabled" and stop the service as well. Restart.

I don't think so :)

Just remember though - the "messenger service" and "MSN messenger" are 2 different things

We are talking about the "messenger service"

Hi Larry,

Thanks again for your help and time. I did try and verify the steps you suggested and found that my settings were already as you suggested they should be. Not sure how to kill this bird but it's a nasty one. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jeff

Try installing and running this program to check for malware. It seems to be one of the best for free at attacking all those popups.

You might also try http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

It's also free, runs in latent memory to catch malware as it's trying to install...

Jdurham,

You may want to seek help on this forum.

http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?

I had similar problems with my fathers PC.
Took me quite a while to get control.

The readme's and FAQ's are very helpful with security Spyware problems.
