linking to pdf - 8/10/2005 12:45:04
I maintin a website for a friend and have always been able to view the .pdf documents on this site. Now for some reason I can't fathom out I'm no longer to view them!

The page in question is (http://www.freelance-journalist.co.uk/perfect_bride/bride_acrobat.htm)

Maybe you could be so kind to let me know if you can open any of the .pdf documents on this page because if you can it means my Adobe Reader isn't working properly.

Let me know eh? :)

That's what I thought; I'm now un-installing Adobe reader and am going to re-install it.

You're a star... and so quick too... thanks. :)

If your using Windows XP and you've done the most recent system update it may have adjusted the security setting in IE. I noticed my setting had been made more restrictive after the last update a few day ago.

Anyone else notice that?

At last, yes Rich it has been playing havoc with one of my sites which has a lot of pdf content. I noticed that when calling them the url in the status bar changed from http://www.etc.co.uk/file.html to http://etc.co.uk/file.html and of course returned the error page. Thanks for posting this - I was just about to republish and overwrite the whole site thinking that the extensions may have gone awry.

I tried rolling back that update, but it didn't make any difference so I thought that my initial assumption was wrong. There must be something in the other updates that were sent at the same time that has this effect too. So what to do when users complain? (Most of them do not have the option of changing to Fx).

Well it's definitely not the pdfs or the web site. I have a pdf on my site and I can get at it fine. I'm using XPPro. My other half has a laptop with W2K on it and he can also get it, he says he has all the latest updates on there.

Caz can't get it. My concern is that she has sent me a screenshot of the returned page and the header says

"Cannot find server - Prepare to be assimilated babycakes"

Now either that's a Giomanach fix to your system or you have caught something nasty.

Ooops, better not let the Sheep see that - it's a customised fix and nothing nasty :)
Looks to me now like it's the server and the win2003 server patches.

"IE - prepare to be assimilated babycakes" kinda sums it all up don't you think :)

Problem solved - see Hints and Tips section for the details. It was a combination of M$ and Adobe - the dynamic duo, not.:)
