Folder will not open - 8/12/2005 17:37:47

Hi, all,

I have been using Front Page for several years now and have not run across this problem before. As background, I'm a health care worker who took up building websites as a way to provide continuing professional education. Just upgraded to FP 2003 a few months ago.

I always update one of my sites live and the ISP changed servers awhile ago. They did tell me that I might have problems as the site was large (420MB). They claim that FP has trouble handling sites over 50 MB and recommended that I break it into several subwebs of 40-50 MB each. I have not done that as I'm not sure how and there's another complication that I won't go into yet.

PROBLEM: One of the folders on the site will not open. After several minutes it gives a timed out message. New files can be added to the folder, however, by dragging and dropping from my desktop. The folder(named "library") is probably the largest on the site with a few html pages but mostly other docs (Word, pdf, powerpoint) that are linked from other pages on the site.

To update files in the problem folder I've been opening the particular webpage in IE, saving as html to my desktop, revising, then dragging and dropping back into the folder (with the remote site open in FP). Quite a pain.

Also note that when I published the site to my desktop (as a back-up), the contents of the "library" folder would not come across.

QUESTIONS:
1. Is it reasonable that the problem with this folder is that the site is too large for FP 2003 to handle?
2. Any suggestions for how to troubleshoot and fix the problem?

Many thanks for any advice.

Cheers, Pat (aka Shrimpie)

Hi Pat and welcome to Outfront. I have to admit it's not a problem I've come across but I do have a solution.

I would extract all the non-html stuff from the libary folder and stick it in its own folder called documents. Upload that with an ftp client or via your host control panel.

Don't even attempt to publish them backwards and forwards with FP, just let that handle what it's used to.

Make sure you change all your links though. :)

Thanks, Jaybee, but I cannot extract all the non-html files from the "library" folder because the folder won't open. :)
Also, just for info, I can only use FP to upload files and revised html pages because the ISP requires me to use FP or FTP, one or the other but not both. I prefer FP for this particular site because it's revised many times daily and working live in FP is speedy.

Don't you have a control panel that allows you to get at the files direct on the host?

Unfortunately, when FP is selected, "file manager" is disabled at the ISP web management site.

I don't have a clue what file manager is. It could be the equivalent of what you are calling the control panel. Or it could be a web-based file management system that I once used with a Verisign-hosted site that was designed for people without html knowledge to use and which was absolutely awful.

In any case, no - there is no way to manage files except by FP when that option is chosen.

Cheers, Pat

Are you able to check with your host that the permissions for that folder are the same as for a folder that works?

The control panel is provided by your host and you log into your account online to get at it.

They are usually http://domainname/cpanel/ or something similar. Check your sign up stuff, look in your host support area or ask your host.

RE: Folder will not open: cause/work-around - 8/18/2005 20:56:15
There is an admin site to control the website but you cannot load and download files from it. Once Front Page is selected, that's it. Also, I checked and the permissions were the same for all files and folders.

For interest, the ISP has investigated and reports the problem is that the "library" folder is too large and that Front Page cannot handle folders this size (it contained many pdf and powerpoint docs).

This was confirmed indirectly by this work-around:
-downloading every files (html, pdf, ppt, doc)
-deleting the existing library folder
-creating a new library folder
-creating separate folders for pdf, ppt, and doc files
-reloading every file into its appropriate folder
- revising all the links to reflect the new folders

Yikes! But it worked and I can now open all folders, including the new "library" folder. :)

Seems folders with many large fioles are a problem for Front Page.

Thanks to all who responded.
