Poor Screen Capture Quality - 8/14/2005 1:16:09
Hi everyone,

I'm looking at providing screenshots of my templates in a pop-up window on my website. By clicking on the image in the following link, you'll see an example.

Template

What I'm trying to do is simulate how a template would look in a 1024 x 768 browser window, regardless of the screen resolution that the viewer is using (800 x 600 or above). Therefore I've been reducing my screen resolution to 1024 x 768, taking a screenshot using Paint Shop Pro and then resizing that screenshot to 750px width so viewers that are using 800 x 600 screen resolution can still view the pop-up window.

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8, and just can't seem to reproduce a clear enough image once the image has been resized. Does anyone else here who uses PSP 8 know how I can make these iimages of a decent quality?

Thanks,

Nicole

Hi Nicole

I don't use PSP but I had a bit of a play with this anyway! I found that I got a reasonably good quality image if I did a screenshot, cropped the screenshot to just either side of the central container and then saved it as a gif (it was approx 735 px wide). It came out at 107k but it looked much clearer.

Thanks Tailslide,

I don't really want to crop the image that much as I'd prefer to give a more accurate impression of how the screen appears at 1024 x 768. But i'll look further into how it looks saved as a .gif

Thanks

Nicole

after resizing use the oddly named unsharp mask (that's what it's called in fireworks and photoshop) though sharpen will do pretty much the same thing if you can't find such a thing in PSP.

Just a thought.
I find that reducing my screen below its native resolution (in my case 1280x1024) makes for slightly fuzzy text anyway: any resolution higher than the native (it goes up to 2048x1536 for all the good that is) is fine.

So if you take a whole screen shot in your screen's native/higher resolution rather than reduce the resolution and copy that, you can crop or cut an area 1024x768. This may be a bit fiddly to centre properly, but should work.

Going lateral again!
May I suggest the savvy way (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) is to use the FF or IE Web Developer Toolbar. Put up the maximised screen in its native resolution, then use the toolbar to "Resize the window" to 1024x768. Make sure it is the active window then Alt + PrintScreen will copy only that window. Paste into PSP, cut down to just below the toolbar area as you are not actually showing this in the template. This way you are not allowing PSP to try to reduce or resize the image - 'tiz just copy, paste and a litttle cut. It works beautifully for me:)

Hope that helps

That's brilliant Spitfire. Why did I never think of using FF in this way :)
Thanks.

Thanks caz and d a v e praise indeed oh multi-starred ones :)
caz you just ain't old enough.
When you've had the troubles I had with PSP 2/3/4/5/6/7, (I've got stories that could curl your hair) trying to get anything like a good reduction in xs of 5% - you just give up, have a double malt, kick the dog and find Another Way. :)

Oops:)
Having gone all the way through this, Nicole is going to be confused or worse still err... irritated. Nicole actually wants a picture that looks like a 1024x768 screen i.e. with the wider side margins, but that picture must still display at 800x600. Apart from asking.... w h y?

Let's go turbo lateral!
Get your good quality 1024x768 piccy as above, then size it relatively, live-time uh:)

View in IE first
http://www.wats.ca/resources/relativesizing/20
This technique is primarily to *increase* the picture size relative to text-size increases. But it also works if you reduce the the text-size - watch the top picture. The article gives in-line code, you will need to code imaginatively. I use the code in external stylesheets and it works just the same.

Next view that page in FF and fiddle with the text-size.

He he - now you can make FF and IE behave just like Opera.:)

I did something like that last year to keep decorative images from acting silly when the page/text was resized. I got the idea from another source, it was Papabaer I think. It does take some trial and error arriving at a useful em/px ratio but it is well worth it. I have used some simple classes to apply it where needed.

img.pt {

width: 7em;

height: 9.5em;}

img.lsp {

width: 8em;

height: 6em;}

This was something of an experiment, but you can see how it works squidgey images

Thanks Caz, Spitfire & Dave.

Just woken up here so I'll give those things a try and report back here tonight. Oh, and i'm sorry to take the gloss off Spitfire a bit.....but I was already resizing the window using the FF web dev toolbar. I used to hate resizing things the longhand way and then finding that your desktop had moved all over the place.

Thanks for your help though, i was thinking that this partiicular example was a bit tricky because it was white text on a black background, but i'll give those things a try and write them back here tonight.

Nicole

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this thread, I've tried all but the actual cropping the screenshot idea from above and have ended up with as best a result as i think i can get.

The reasons I wanted it to simulate how a screenshot would look on a 1024x768 monitor to a viewer using an 800x600 screen res is because i wanted the pop-up window to fit on an 800x600 screen res. If there's another way of doing this which i've overlooked, i'd welcome any thoughts.

I've noticed on the PixelMill website that their template screenshots aren't top quality, so i'll probably go with what i have now, as it's pretty close to the quality they provide on their site.
