USB port problems - 8/17/2005 22:25:30
I'm having some problems with my USB ports. For some reason they have stopped recognising some of my devices. If I plug in my scanner or USB drive I get the message "Unknown device". Previously both devices worked fine. The USB drive doesnt/didnt require software while the scanner software had been installed. I uninstalled the scanner software and then reinstalled it but no luck. The ports are working fine as the HP inkjet printer is still working. The devices themselves work fine on other computers. I am using Windows XP. Anyone have any ideas ??

Thanks

Steve

In my simple non techy way I would uninstall the problem devices through Device Manager ( I am using Win2K so you'll have to translate for XP) . Unplug the devices, then close down. Plug one back in, restart and windows should find it. Close down again, replug the other one and the device should be recognised on restart.

This didn't happen to coincide with the recent XP update did it?

I havent upgraded the OS at all. This is the OEM version of XP. The only thing I can think of is that my mouse is now plugged into a USB port (as opposed to the round plug whatever that is called) and I installed some protected software that uses a USB key for protection. WOuld either of these make a difference ?
