How to verify Frontpage Server Extensions installed? - 8/19/2005 3:27:03
I have spent about an hour searching these forums to find out how to verify whether frontpage extensions are installed.

I have sites on RedHat Linux/Apache/cPanel server and Windows/IIS/Helm server and both control panels report that fpse are properly installed.

BTW I have tried the uninstall/reinstall method with no joy.

I tried the fpse verify tool at http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.htm This seems to work great except that the only site which appears to have fpse installed is the example site provided http://www.hsound.com I tried this tool with about a dozen sites from this forum including hosts and testimonial client sites and not one of these appear to have fpse installed.

So I have 2 questions:

  • Can I rely on this tool to positively verify that fpse are in fact installed?
  • What else can I try to get the fpse installed?

Thank you in advance for any help with this.

- They might be "installed" but not working, thus the error.

- Log into your control panel and look for a FPSE link, it should say if it is installed or not.

Thanks Bobby but this would mean that the dozen sites that I tried on http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.htm all do not have fpse installed or the fpse are not working. Kinda hard to believe for prominent OutFront forum members don't you think?

Even your own site reportedly does not have fpse installed so you might understand why I am questioning the validity of the results.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the fpse through my control panels (WHM and Helm) and both report successfull installs without errors. Helm also provides a fpse check tool and this reports fpse installed correctly.

This is all very frustrating. :)

beekeeper,

Absent from your comments is why you ask the question to begin with. If you have a specific error, please state what it is. Also, a URL would be helpful. Extension anomalies are a common topic on OutFront and are quite solvable given complete information.

BTW, I've found dnswiz to be quite reliable except, as Dan G. states, those responses that ....

"Sometimes this will say "This Server Does Not Disclose It's Identity" - This merely means that the host has disabled the Identity broadcasting feature, and has implemented some advanced security measures, for your benefit, and not theirs."

- That's because they are not installed on my site :)

Hi Larry,

Thanks for responding and being "results focussed".

Specifically I have a client who is using frontpage and wishes to add a form which sends the form results to an email recipient.

I initiated this thread because I suspect that I have a systematic fpse problem ... ie are fpse installed on my server properly? In my mind this issue must be resolved before I can move on to troubleshoot my client's specific form problem.

FWIW you can check the results from the following urls however at this point I can't refer you to particular pages because fp will not allow me to "publish" :) ... hence the reason I started this thread:

http://cpanel.com.au
http://net333.com

I would like to think that dnswiz is reliable too however to date nobody from this forum has been able to provide a web address which reports fpse installed "YES". Even if I discount the "This Server Does Not Disclose It's Identity" results there are still a handful of sites, including Bobs site, which report fpse installed "NO". Doesn't anyone here find this to be a curious anomoly?

- Check: f-n-f-r-a-n-k.com (remove the dashes). I just installed FPSE on that account.

Hooray!! :) Thanks Bob for helping me to verify that the dnswiz tool works. I guess, for whatever reasons, your main site and the other sites I tested previously do not have fpse installed.

Now that I have verified my own sites do not have fpse installed (or working) properly are there any server admins here who have faced similar issue and do you have any suggested course of action?

Here is the output when I install (after uninstalling) via my WHM console:

<output>
Using Frontpage 5.x!
Building site conf for www.cpanel.com.au...Done

Starting install, port: 80.

Creating web http://www.cpanel.com.au.
Chowning Content in service /.
Install completed.
Setting Password
Frontpage passthough auth enabled!
</output>

Log into WHM > Under 'Frontpage' > 'Install FrontPage Extensions' > Select the user/domain & click 'Install'

What version of WHM are you using?

beekeeper,

Not an orbital observation: I interpret this to mean no FP extensions are installed on the host server (or they are broken).

Have you at any point FTP'd or attempted to FTP files?

I am on cPanel Build 10.6.0-R55

At this point I can now "publish" to a site (http://www.aboutauto.com.au/test.htm) *and* my form to email handler is working :) ... however ...

I still get the "disk based .... fpse not installed" warning when I publish and according to dnswiz the site still reportedly does not have fpse installed.

So technically I do not have a problem but I am still concerned that some clients will receive this error and perceive that there is a problem, give up, complain, etc.

I suspect frontpage is looking for a particular config file and cPanels implementation of fpse is not 100% compliant with micro$oft's recommended deployment.

Has anyone else come across this issue?
